Proverbs 23
American Standard Version
1When thou sittest to eatH3898 with a rulerH4910, ConsiderH995 diligently him that is before thee;2And putH7760 a knife to thy throatH5315, If thou be a man given to appetiteH5315.3Be not desirous of his dainties; Seeing they are deceitful foodH3899.4WearyH3021 not thyself to be richH6238; CeaseH2308 from thine own wisdom.5Wilt thou set thine eyesH5869 upon that which is not? Forrichescertainly makeH6213 themselves wingsH3671, Like an eagleH5404 that flieth toward heavenH8064.6EatH3898 thou not the breadH3899 of him that hath an evilH7451 eyeH5869, Neither desireH183 thou his dainties:7For as he thinketh within himself, soH3651 is he: EatH398 and drinkH8354, saith he to thee; But his heartH3820 is not with thee.8The morselH6595 which thou hast eatenH398 shalt thou vomitH6958 up, And lose thy sweet wordsH1697.9SpeakH1696 not in the hearing of a foolH3684; For he will despiseH936 the wisdom of thy wordsH4405.10Remove not the ancient landmark; And enter not into the fieldsH7704 of the fatherlessH3490:11For their RedeemerH1350 is strongH2389; He will plead their causeH7379 against thee.12Apply thy heartH3820 unto instruction, And thine earsH241 to the wordsH561 of knowledgeH1847.13WithholdH4513 not correctionH4148 from the child; Forif thou beat him with the rodH7626, he will not dieH4191.14Thou shalt beat him with the rodH7626, And shalt deliverH5337 his soulH5315 from SheolH7585.15My sonH1121, if thy heartH3820 be wiseH2449, My heartH3820 will be gladH8055, even mine:16Yea, my heart will rejoiceH5937, When thy lipsH8193 speakH1696 right things.17Let not thy heartH3820 envy sinnersH2400; Butbe thouin the fearH3374 of Jehovah all the dayH3117 long:18For surely there is a reward; And thy hopeH8615 shall not be cutH3772 off.19HearH8085 thou, my sonH1121, and be wiseH2449, And guide thy heartH3820 in the wayH1870.20BeH1961 not among winebibbers, Among gluttonous eaters of fleshH1320:21For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; And drowsiness will clotheH3847a manwith rags.22Hearken unto thy fatherH1 that begat thee, And despiseH936 not thy motherH517 when she is oldH2204.23BuyH7069 the truthH571, and sellH4376 it not; Yea, wisdomH2451, and instruction, and understandingH998.24The fatherH1 of the righteousH6662 will greatly rejoiceH8055; And he that begetteth a wiseH2450 childH3205 will have joy of him.25Let thy fatherH1 and thy motherH517 be gladH8055, And let her that bare thee rejoiceH8055.26My sonH1121, giveH5414 me thy heartH3820; And let thine eyesH5869 delightH7521 in my waysH1870.27For a harlot is a deepH6013 ditch; And a foreignH5237 womanH5237 is a narrow pitH7745.28Yea, she lieth in waitH693 as a robber, And increaseth the treacherousH898 among menH120.29Who hath woeH188? who hath sorrow? who hath contentionsH4066? Who hath complaining? who hath woundsH6482 without causeH2600? Who hath redness of eyesH5869?30They that tarry long at the wineH3196; They that goH935 to seek out mixedH4469 wineH3196.31LookH7200 not thou upon the wineH3196 when it is redH119, When it sparkleth in the cup, When it goeth down smoothly:32At the last it biteth like a serpent, And stingeth like an adder.33Thine eyesH5869 shall behold strangeH2114 thingsH8419, And thy heartH3820 shall utter perverseH8419 thingsH8419.34Yea, thou shalt beH1961 as he that lieth downH7901 in the midst of the seaH3220, Or as he that lieth upon the topH7218 of a mast.35They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not hurt; They have beaten me, and I felt it not: WhenH4970 shall I awake? I will seekH1245 it yetH5750 againH5750.
