Jeremiah 9
Revised Version 1895
1OhH4310 that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my peopleH5971! 2Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging placeH7198 of wayfaring men; that I might leaveH3318 my peopleH3808, and goH3318 from them! for they be allH3045 adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men. 3And they bend their tongue as it were their bow for falsehood; and they are grown strong in the land, but notH408 for truth: for they proceedH1980 from evil to evil, and they know notH408 meH5921, saith the LORD. 4Take ye heed everyH376 one of his neighbour, and trust ye notH3808 in anyH376 brother: for everyH376 brother will utterly supplant, and everyH376 neighbour will go aboutH1696 with slanders. 5And they will deceive every one his neighbour, and will notH3045 speak the truth: they have taughtH3045 their tongue to speak liesH4820; they weary themselves to commit iniquity. 6Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit; throughH3651 deceit they refuse to know meH6440, saith the LORDH3068. 7Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, I will melt them, and try them; for howH7965 elseH7453 should I do, because of the daughter of my peopleH1696? 8Their tongue is a deadlyH5315 arrow; it speaketh deceit: one speaketh peaceably to his neighbour with his mouthH5315, but in his heartH5315 he layeth wait for him. 9Shall I notH3808 visit them for these things? saith the LORD: shall notH3808 my soul be avenged on suchH3808 a nation as this? 10For the mountains will I takeH5414 upH5414 a weeping and wailing, and for the pastures of the wilderness a lamentation, becauseH1097 they are burned upH5414, soH5414 that none passeth through; neither can men hear the voice of the cattle; both the fowl of the heavens and the beast are fled, they are gone. 11And I will makeH5046 Jerusalem heaps, a dwelling placeH776 of jackals; and I will makeH5046 the cities of Judah a desolation, withoutH1097 inhabitant. 12Who is the wise man, that may understandH8085 this? and who is he to whomH834 the mouthH6440 of the LORDH3068 hath spokenH559, that he may declare it? wherefore is the landH6440 and perished burned upH5921 like a wilderness, soH1980 that noneH3808 passeth throughH5921? 13And the LORD saith, BecauseH834 they have forsaken my law whichH834 I setH834 before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein; 14but have walked after the stubbornness of their own heart, and after the Baalim, whichH4325 their fathers taught them: 15therefore thusH3808 saith the LORD of hosts, the GodH3808 of Israel, BeholdH3808, I will feedH3615 them, evenH5704 this peopleH1471, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink. 16I will scatter them also among the nations, whomH7121 neither they norH413 their fathers have known: and I will sendH7971 the sword afterH413 them, till I have consumed them. 17Thus saith the LORD of hosts, ConsiderH5375 ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may comeH3381; and send for the cunning women, that they may comeH3381: 18and let them makeH8085 haste, and take upH4908 a wailingH5092 for usH3588, that our eyes may run downH7993 with tears, and our eyelids gush outH7993 with waters. 19For a voice of wailingH5092 is heardH8085 out of Zion, HowH3588 are weH3588 spoiled! weH3588 are greatly confounded, becauseH3588 weH3588 have forsaken the land, becauseH3588 they have cast downH3588 our dwellings. 20Yet hear the word of the LORD, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth, and teach your daughters wailing, and every one herH3772 neighbour lamentation. 21For deathH5038 is comeH5307 upH5921 intoH5921 our windows, it is entered intoH5921 our palaces; to cut offH5921 the children from withoutH369, and the young menH120 from the streets. 22SpeakH559, ThusH3541 saith the LORDH3068, The carcases of menH1368 shall fall as dung upon the open field, and as the handful after the harvestman, and noneH408 shall gather them. 23Thus saith the LORDH3068, Let notH518 the wiseH7919 man glory in his wisdom, neitherH518 let the mighty man glory in his might, let notH518 the rich man glory in his riches: 24but letH6485 him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth, and knoweth meH5921, that I am the LORDH3068 which exercise lovingkindness, judgmentH935, and righteousness, in the earth: for in theseH3605 things I delight, saith the LORDH3068. 25Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will punish allH3605 them whichH1471 are circumcised in their uncircumcision; 26Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that have the corners of their hair polled, that dwell in the wilderness: for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in heart.
