Jeremiah 38
Revised Version 1895
1And ShephatiahH8203 the sonH1121 of MattanH4977, and GedaliahH1436 the sonH1121 of PashhurH6583, and Jucal the sonH1121 of ShelemiahH8018, and PashhurH6583 the sonH1121 of MalchijahH4441, heardH8085 the wordsH1697 that JeremiahH3414 spake unto allH3605 the peopleH5971, sayingH559, 2ThusH3541 saith the LORDH3068, He that abideth in this cityH5892 shall dieH4191 by the swordH2719, by the famineH7458, and by the pestilenceH1698: but he that goeth forthH3318 to the ChaldeansH3778 shall liveH3427, and his lifeH5315 shall be unto him for a prey, and he shall liveH3427. 3ThusH3541 saith the LORDH3068, This cityH5892 shall surelyH5414 be givenH5414 intoH3027 the handH3027 of the armyH2428 of the kingH4428 of BabylonH894, and he shall takeH3920 it. 4Then the princesH8269 saidH559 unto the kingH4428, LetH4994 this manH376, weH3588 prayH4994 thee, be putH4191 to deathH4191; forasmuch as he weakeneth the handsH3027 of the menH376 of warH4421 that remainH7604 in this cityH5892, and the handsH3027 of allH3605 the peopleH5971, in speakingH1696 suchH2088 wordsH1697 unto them: for this manH376 seeketh notH369 the welfareH7965 of this peopleH5971, but the hurt. 5And ZedekiahH6667 the kingH4428 saidH559, BeholdH2009, he is in your handH3027: for the kingH4428 is notH3201 he that canH3201 doH3201 anyH369 thingH1697 againstH854 youH3588. 6Then tookH3947 they JeremiahH3414, and castH7993 him intoH413 the dungeon of MalchijahH4441 the king’s sonH1121, that was in the courtH2691 of the guardH4307: and they letH7971 downH7993 JeremiahH3414 with cordsH2256. And in the dungeon there was noH369 waterH4325, but mireH2916: and JeremiahH3414 sankH2883 in the mireH2916. 7NowH3588 when Ebed-melechH5663 the EthiopianH3569, an eunuchH5631, whichH1931 was in the king’sH4428 houseH1004, heardH8085 that they had putH5414 JeremiahH3414 in the dungeon; the kingH4428 then sittingH3427 in the gateH8179 of BenjaminH1144; 8Ebed-melechH5663 wentH3318 forthH3318 outH3318 of the king’sH4428 houseH1004, and spake to the kingH4428, sayingH559, 9My lordH113 the kingH4428, theseH428 menH376 have doneH6213 evilH7489 in allH3605 that they have doneH6213 to JeremiahH3414 the prophetH5030, whomH834 they have castH7993 intoH413 the dungeon; and he is like to dieH4191 in the placeH8478 whereH834 he is becauseH3588 of the famineH7458: for there is noH369 moreH5750 breadH3899 in the cityH5892. 10Then the kingH4428 commandedH6680 Ebed-melechH5663 the EthiopianH3569, sayingH559, TakeH3947 from hence thirtyH7970 menH376 with thee, and takeH3947 upH5927 JeremiahH3414 the prophetH5030 outH4480 of the dungeon, beforeH2962 he dieH4191. 11SoH3947 Ebed-melechH5663 tookH3947 the menH376 with him, and wentH935 intoH413 the houseH1004 of the kingH4428 underH8478 the treasuryH214, and tookH3947 thence old castH7971 clouts and old rotten ragsH4418, and letH7971 them downH7971 by cordsH2256 intoH413 the dungeon to JeremiahH3414. 12And Ebed-melechH5663 the EthiopianH3569 saidH559 unto JeremiahH3414, PutH7760 nowH4994 theseH7760 old cast clouts and rotten ragsH4418 underH8478 thine armholes underH8478 the cordsH2256. And JeremiahH3414 didH6213 soH3651. 13SoH4480 they drewH4900 upH5927 JeremiahH3414 with the cordsH2256, and tookH853 him upH5927 outH4480 of the dungeon: and JeremiahH3414 remainedH3427 in the courtH2691 of the guardH4307. 14Then ZedekiahH6667 the kingH4428 sentH7971, and tookH3947 JeremiahH3414 the prophetH5030 unto him intoH413 the thirdH7992 entryH3996 that is in the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068: and the kingH4428 saidH559 unto JeremiahH3414, I will askH7592 thee a thingH1697; hideH3582 nothingH408 from meH413. 15Then JeremiahH3414 saidH559 unto ZedekiahH6667, IfH3588 I declareH5046 it unto thee, wilt thou notH3808 surelyH3588 putH4191 meH413 to deathH4191? and ifH3588 I giveH3289 thee counselH3289, thou wilt notH3808 hearken unto meH413. 16SoH6213 ZedekiahH6667 the kingH4428 sware secretly unto JeremiahH3414, sayingH559, As the LORDH3068 liveth, that madeH6213 usH5414 this soulH5315, I will notH518 putH5414 thee to deathH4191, neitherH518 will I giveH5414 thee intoH413 the handH3027 of theseH428 menH376 that seekH1245 thy lifeH5315. 17Then saidH559 JeremiahH3414 unto ZedekiahH6667, ThusH3541 saith the LORDH3068, the GodH430 of hostsH6635, the GodH430 of IsraelH3478: IfH518 thou wilt goH3318 forthH3318 unto the kingH4428 of Babylon’sH894 princesH8269, then thy soulH5315 shall liveH2421, and this cityH5892 shall notH3808 be burnedH8313 with fireH784; and thou shalt liveH2421, and thine houseH1004: 18But ifH518 thou wilt notH3808 goH3318 forthH3318 to the kingH4428 of Babylon’sH894 princesH8269, then shall this cityH5892 be givenH5414 intoH413 the handH3027 of the ChaldeansH3778, and they shall burnH8313 it with fireH784, and thou shalt notH3808 escapeH4422 outH3318 of their handH3027. 19And ZedekiahH6667 the kingH4428 saidH559 unto JeremiahH3414, I am afraid of the JewsH3064 that are fallenH5307 awayH5307 to the ChaldeansH3778, lestH6435 they deliverH5414 meH413 intoH413 their handH3027, and they mock meH413. 20But JeremiahH3414 saidH559, They shall notH3808 deliverH5414 thee. ObeyH8085, I beseechH4994 thee, the voiceH6963 of the LORDH3068, in that whichH834 I speakH1696 unto thee: soH5414 it shall be wellH3190 with thee, and thy soulH5315 shall liveH2421. 21But ifH518 thou refuseH3986 to goH3318 forthH3318, this is the wordH1697 that the LORDH3068 hath shewed meH7200: 22beholdH2009, allH3605 the womenH802 that are leftH7604 in the kingH4428 of Judah’sH3063 houseH1004 shall be broughtH3318 forthH3318 to the kingH4428 of Babylon’sH894 princesH8269, and thoseH3605 womenH802 shall sayH559, Thy familiar friends have setH3318 thee on, and have prevailedH3201 over thee: nowH2009 that thy feetH7272 are sunkH2883 in the mireH1206: they are turnedH5472 awayH3318 backH268. 23And they shall bringH3318 outH3318 allH3605 thy wivesH802 and thy childrenH1121 to the ChaldeansH3778: and thou shalt notH3808 escapeH4422 outH3318 of their handH3027, but shalt be takenH8610 by the handH3027 of the kingH4428 of BabylonH894: and thou shalt cause this cityH5892 to be burnedH8313 with fireH784. 24Then saidH559 ZedekiahH6667 unto JeremiahH3414, LetH408 noH3808 manH376 knowH3045 of theseH428 wordsH1697, and thou shalt notH3808 dieH4191. 25But ifH3588 the princesH8269 hearH8085 that I have talkedH1696 with thee, and they comeH935 unto thee, and sayH559 unto thee, DeclareH5046 unto usH4994 nowH4994 whatH4100 thou hast saidH559 unto the kingH4428; hideH3582 it notH3808 from usH4994, and weH3588 will notH3808 putH4191 thee to deathH4191: also whatH4100 the kingH4428 saidH559 unto thee: 26then thou shalt sayH559 unto them, I presented my supplicationH8467 beforeH6440 the kingH4428, that he would notH1115 causeH7725 meH413 to returnH7725 to Jonathan’sH3083 houseH1004, to dieH4191 there. 27Then cameH935 allH3605 the princesH8269 unto JeremiahH3414, and askedH7592 him: and he toldH5046 them accordingH413 to allH3605 theseH428 wordsH1697 that the kingH4428 had commandedH6680. SoH4480 they leftH935 offH4480 speakingH1697 with him; for the matterH1697 was notH3808 perceived. 28SoH1961 JeremiahH3414 abodeH3427 in the courtH2691 of the guardH4307 untilH5704 the dayH3117 that JerusalemH3389 was takenH3920. And it cameH1961 to passH1961 when JerusalemH3389 was takenH3920,
