Context of Song of Songs 8:12

10“I was a wall, and my breasts were like towers; Then I became in his eyes as one who finds peace. 11Solomon had a vineyard at Baal-hamon; He entrusted the vineyard to caretakers. Each one was to bring a thousand shekels of silver for its fruit. My very own vineyard is at my disposal; The thousand shekels are for you, Solomon, And two hundred are for those who take care of its fruit.” 13“You who sit in the gardens: My companions are listening for your voice-- Let me hear it!” 14“Hurry, my beloved, And be like a gazelle or a young stag On the mountains of balsam trees!”

Commentaries on Song of Songs 8:12

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-12Verses 8-12 The church pleads for the Gentiles, who then had not the word of God, nor the means of grace. Those who are brought to Christ themselves, should contrive what they may do to help others to him. Babes in Christ are always seen among Christians, and the welfare of their weak brethren is an object of continual prayer with the stronger believers. If the beginning of this work were likened to a wall built upon Him the precious Foundation and…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11-14In the dramatic view, the wife's problem with the vineyard in Song of Solomon 1:6 is finally solved. She has collected the lease money from her vineyard in Baal-hamon, allowing her to pay Solomon and her hired workers. If the passage is purely poetic, its main message is that love cannot be bought, even by a powerful king like Solomon.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1212. "mine" by grant of the true Solomon. Not merely "let out to keepers," as in the Jewish dispensation of works, but "mine" by grace. This is "before me," that is, in my power [Maurer]. But though no longer under constraint of "keeping" the law as a mere letter and covenant of works, love to Jesus Christ will constrain her the more freely to render all to Solomon (Ro 8:2-4; 1Co 6:20; Ga 5:13; 1Pe 2:16), after having paid what justice and His will require…Read the comment
• Rashi on Tanakh · v. 12My vineyard, which is mine, is before me for on the day of judgment, the Holy One, blessed be He, will bring them to justice, and He will say, “My vineyard, even though I delivered it into your hands, it is Mine, and before Me is all that you seized for yourselves, its fruit. And that which you collected from them is not hidden from Me.” And they will say:Read the comment
