Context of Daniel 12:9

7And I heard the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream, as he raised his right hand and his left toward heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever that it would be for a time, times, and half a time; and as soon as they finish smashing the power of the holy people, all these events will be completed. 8But as for me, I heard but did not understand; so I said, “My lord, what will be the outcome of these events?” And he said, “Go your way, Daniel, for these words will be kept secret and sealed up until the end time. 10Many will be purged, cleansed, and refined, but the wicked will act wickedly; and none of the wicked will understand, but those who have insight will understand. 11And from the time that the regular sacrifice is abolished and the abomination of desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days.

Commentaries on Daniel 12:9

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9The words are closed up - The prophecy shall not be understood, but in its accomplishment; and then the depth of the wisdom and providence of God will be clearly seen in these matters. See on Daniel 4 (note). We must wait "till the time of the end;" and this, it appears from the following calculations, will not arrive before the Twentieth Century. We here see the reason why these prophecies are at present so imperfectly understood. God has sealed them.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9And he said, Go thy way, Daniel - That is, make no further inquiries. All has been disclosed that is to be. At the close of his communication Daniel 12:4, he had told Daniel to shut up, and seal the book, for his revelations were ended. He here repeats substantially the same thing, and he assures him that no more could be imparted on the subject. For the words are closed up and sealed until the time of the end - He had finished his communication, and had…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-13Verses 5-13 One of the angels asking how long it should be to the end of these wonders, a solemn reply is made, that it would be for a time, times, and a half, the period mentioned Dn 7:25, and in the Revelation. It signifies 1260 prophetic days or years, beginning from the time when the power of the holy people should be scattered. The imposture of Mohammed, and the papal usurpation, began about the same time; and these were a twofold attack upon the…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-10God did not reveal exactly how and when everything would end. Daniel would not witness the end (Daniel 12:13); his task was to live his life with faith. purified, made spotless, and refined: God would use violent and terrifying times to improve the moral and religious character of his people (compare Daniel 11:35).
