Context of Daniel 12:8

6And someone said to the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream, “How long will it be until the end of these wonders?” 7And I heard the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream, as he raised his right hand and his left toward heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever that it would be for a time, times, and half a time; and as soon as they finish smashing the power of the holy people, all these events will be completed. But as for me, I heard but did not understand; so I said, “My lord, what will be the outcome of these events?” 9And he said, “Go your way, Daniel, for these words will be kept secret and sealed up until the end time. 10Many will be purged, cleansed, and refined, but the wicked will act wickedly; and none of the wicked will understand, but those who have insight will understand.

Commentaries on Daniel 12:8

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8I heard, but I understand not - Could not comprehend what the time, times, and half time should refer to. These make three years and a half of prophetic times answering to one thousand two hundred and sixty years.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8And I heard, but I understood not - He understood not the full significance of the language employed - “a time, and times, and an half.” This would make it probable that there was something more intended than merely three years and a half as the period of the continuation of these troubles. Daniel saw, apparently from the manner of the angel, as well as from the terms which he used, that there was something mystical and unusual in those terms, and he…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-13Verses 5-13 One of the angels asking how long it should be to the end of these wonders, a solemn reply is made, that it would be for a time, times, and a half, the period mentioned Dn 7:25, and in the Revelation. It signifies 1260 prophetic days or years, beginning from the time when the power of the holy people should be scattered. The imposture of Mohammed, and the papal usurpation, began about the same time; and these were a twofold attack upon the…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-10God did not reveal exactly how and when everything would end. Daniel would not witness the end (Daniel 12:13); his task was to live his life with faith. purified, made spotless, and refined: God would use violent and terrifying times to improve the moral and religious character of his people (compare Daniel 11:35). Being wise means understanding God's ways and living by them. The wicked will not understand or change their ways, even if someone explains…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 88. understood not--Daniel "understood" the main features of the vision as to Antiochus (Da 10:1, 14), but not as to the times. 1Pe 1:10-12 refers mainly to Daniel: for it is he who foretells "the sufferings of Christ and the glory that should follow"; it is he who prophesies "not unto himself, but unto us"; it is he who "searched what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ in him did signify."Read the comment
