Context of Amos 4:13

11“I overthrew you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, And you were like a log snatched from a fire; Yet you have not returned to Me,” declares the Lord. 12“Therefore so I will do to you, Israel; Because I will do this to you, Prepare to meet your God, Israel.” For behold, He who forms mountains and creates the wind, And declares to a person what are His thoughts, He who makes dawn into darkness And treads on the high places of the earth, The Lord God of armies is His name.

Commentaries on Amos 4:13

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13He that formeth the mountains - Here is a powerful description of the majesty of God. He formed the earth; he created the wind; he knows the inmost thoughts of the heart; he is the Creator of darkness and light; he steps from mountain to mountain, and has all things under his feet! Who is he who hath done and can do all these things? Jehovah Elohim Tsebaoth, that is his name. The self-existing, eternal, and independent Being. The God who is in covenant…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13For lo, He that formeth the mountains - Their God whom they worshiped was but nature. Amos tells them, who “their God” is, whom they were to prepare to meet. He describes Him as the Creator of that, which to man seems most solid, to go furthest back in times past. Before the everlasting mountains were, God is, for He made them. Yet God is not a Creator in the past alone. He is a continual Worker. “And formeth the wind,” that finest subtlest creature…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-13Verses 6-13 See the folly of carnal hearts; they wander from one creature to another, seeking for something to satisfy, and labour for that which satisfies not; yet, after all, they will not incline their ear to Him in whom they might find all they can want. Preaching the gospel is as rain, and every thing withers where this rain is wanting. It were well if people were as wise for their souls as they are for their bodies; and, when they have not this rain…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13This verse seems to be a hymn fragment, likely sung by worshipers at Bethel (for other hymn fragments, see Amos 5:8–9; 9:5–6). Israel had been treating God like a baal (a local god with limited power). However, the God they claimed to worship and would face in judgment is all-powerful.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1313. The God whom Israel is to "prepare to meet" (Am 4:12) is here described in sublime terms. wind--not as the Margin, "spirit." The God with whom thou hast to do is the Omnipotent Maker of things seen, such as the stupendous mountains, and of things too subtle to be seen, though of powerful agency, as the "wind." declareth unto man ... his thought--(Psa 139:2). Ye think that your secret thoughts escape My cognizance, but I am the searcher of hearts…Read the comment
