Context of Acts 2:15
13But others were jeering and saying, “They are full of sweet wine!” 14But Peter, taking his stand with the other eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, know this, and pay attention to my words. For these people are not drunk, as you assume, since it is only the third hour of the day; 16but this is what has been spoken through the prophet Joel: 17‘And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters will prophesy, And your young men will see visions, And your old men will have dreams;

Commentaries on Acts 2:15
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 15But the third hour of the day - That is, about nine o'clock in the morning, previously to which the Jews scarcely ever ate or drank, for that hour was the hour of prayer. This custom appears to have been so common that even the most intemperate among the Jews were not known to transgress it; Peter therefore spoke with confidence when he said, these are not drunken - seeing it is but the third hour of the day, previously to which even the intemperate did…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 15For these are not drunken - The word these here includes Peter himself, as well as the others. The charge doubtless extended to all. The third hour of the day - The Jews divided their day into twelve equal parts, reckoning from sunrise to sunset. Of course the hours were longer in summer than in winter. The third hour would correspond to our nine o‘clock in the morning. The reasons why it was so improbable that they would be drunk at that time were the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-21Verses 14-21 Peter's sermon shows that he was thoroughly recovered from his fall, and thoroughly restored to the Divine favour; for he who had denied Christ, now boldly confessed him. His account of the miraculous pouring forth of the Spirit, was designed to awaken the hearers to embrace the faith of Christ, and to join themselves to his church. It was the fulfilling the Scripture, and the fruit of Christ's resurrection and ascension, and proof of both…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14-36This is the first of about 30 speeches in Acts and one of the most important. It marks the beginning of the Christian church. The apostles proclaimed: that the Old Testament promises came true in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, the promised Messiah; that the apostles were eyewitnesses of the public ministry of Jesus and were his chosen representatives; that people must turn away…Read the comment
