Jephthah and His Successors
Then the menH376 of EphraimH669 were summonedH6817, and they crossedH5674 1to ZaphonH6829 and 2saidH559 to JephthahH3316, “WhyH4069 did you crossH5674 overH5674 to fightH3898 against the sonsH1121 of AmmonH5983 withoutH3808 callingH7121 us to goH1980 with you? We will burnH8313 your houseH1004 down on you.” 2JephthahH3316 saidH559 to them, “I and my peopleH5971 were at greatH3966 strifeH7379 with the sonsH1121 of AmmonH5983; when I calledH2199 you, you did not deliverH3467 me from their handH3027. 3When I sawH7200 that you would not deliverH3467 me, I 34tookH7760 my lifeH5315 in my handsH3709 and crossedH5674 overH5674 againstH413 the sonsH1121 of AmmonH5983, and the LordH3068 gaveH5414 them into my handH3027. WhyH4100 then have you comeH5927 up to me thisH2088 dayH3117 to fightH3898 against me?” 4Then JephthahH3316 gatheredH6908 allH3605 the menH376 of GileadH1568 and foughtH3898 EphraimH669; and the menH376 of GileadH1568 5defeatedH5221 EphraimH669, becauseH3588 they saidH559, “You are fugitivesH6412 of EphraimH669, O GileaditesH1568, in the midstH8432 of EphraimH669 and in the midstH8432 of ManassehH4519.” 5The GileaditesH1568 6capturedH3920 the fordsH4569 of the JordanH3383 opposite EphraimH669. And it happenedH1961 whenH3588 any of the fugitivesH6412 of EphraimH669 saidH559, “Let me crossH5674 overH5674,” the menH376 of GileadH1568 would sayH559 to him, “Are you an EphraimiteH673?” If he saidH559, “NoH3808,” 6then they would sayH559 to him, “SayH559 nowH4994, ‘ShibbolethH7642.’” But he saidH559, “SibbolethH5451,” for he couldH3559 not 7pronounceH1696 it correctlyH3651. Then they seizedH270 him and slewH7819 him at the fordsH4569 of the JordanH3383. Thus there fellH5307 at that timeH6256 42,000H705H8147H505 of EphraimH669.
JephthahH3316 judgedH8199 IsraelH3478 sixH8337 yearsH8141. Then JephthahH3316 the GileaditeH1569 diedH4191 and was buriedH6912 in one of the citiesH5892 of GileadH1568.
Now IbzanH78 of BethlehemH1035 judgedH8199 IsraelH3478 afterH310 him. 9He hadH1961 thirtyH7970 sonsH1121, and thirtyH7970 daughtersH1323 whom he 8gaveH7971 in marriage outsideH2351 the family, and he broughtH935 in thirtyH7970 daughtersH1323 from outsideH2351 for his sonsH1121. And he judgedH8199 IsraelH3478 sevenH7651 yearsH8141. 10Then IbzanH78 diedH4191 and was buriedH6912 in BethlehemH1035.
Now ElonH356 the ZebuluniteH2075 judgedH8199 IsraelH3478 afterH310 him; and he judgedH8199 IsraelH3478 tenH6235 yearsH8141. 12Then ElonH356 the ZebuluniteH2075 diedH4191 and was buriedH6912 at AijalonH357 in the landH776 of ZebulunH2074.
Now AbdonH5658 the sonH1121 of HillelH1985 the PirathoniteH6553 judgedH8199 IsraelH3478 afterH310 him. 14He hadH1961 fortyH705 sonsH1121 and thirtyH7970 grandsonsH1121 who rodeH7392 on seventyH7657 donkeysH5895; and he judgedH8199 IsraelH3478 eightH8083 yearsH8141. 15Then AbdonH5658 the sonH1121 of HillelH1985 the PirathoniteH6553 diedH4191 and was buriedH6912 at PirathonH6552 in the landH776 of EphraimH669, in the hillH2022 countryH2022 of the AmalekitesH6003.
