Micah’s Idolatry

1Now there was a manאִ֥ישׁ'ishH376of the hillמֵֽהַר־me.har-H2022countryH2022of Ephraimאֶפְרָ֖יִם'ef.Ra.yimH669whose nameוּשְׁמ֥וֹu.she.MoH8034was Micahמִיכָֽיְהוּ׃mi.Kha.ye.huH4321.

2He saidH559to his motherלְאִמּ֡וֹle.'i.MoH517, “The elevenאֶלֶף֩'e.LefH505 H3967hundredוּמֵאָ֨הu.me.'AhH3967piecesof silverהַכֶּ֜סֶףha.Ke.sefH3701whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834were takenלֻֽקַּֽח־lu.kach-H3947from you, about which you utteredH422a curseH422in my hearingבְּאָזְנַ֔יbe.'a.ze.NaiH241,beholdהִנֵּֽה־hi.neh-H2009,the silverהַכֶּ֥סֶףha.Ke.sefH3701is with me; I tookלְקַחְתִּ֑יוle.kach.TivH3947it.” And his motherאִמּ֔וֹ'i.MoH517saidH559, “Blessedבָּר֥וּךְba.RukhH1288be my sonבְּנִ֖יbe.NiH1121by the Lordלַיהוָֽה׃la.Yah.wehH3068.”

3He then returnedוַיָּ֛שֶׁבvai.Ya.shevH7725the elevenאֶֽלֶף־'e.lef-H505 H3967hundredוּמֵאָ֥הu.me.'AhH3967piecesof silverהַכֶּ֖סֶףha.Ke.sefH3701to his motherלְאִמּ֑וֹle.'i.MoH517,and his motherאִמּ֡וֹ'i.MoH517saidוַתֹּ֣אמֶרva.To.merH559, “I whollyהַקְדֵּ֣שׁhak.DeshH6942dedicateהִקְדַּ֣שְׁתִּיhik.Dash.tiH6942the silverהַכֶּסֶף֩ha.ke.SefH3701from my handמִיָּדִ֜יmi.ya.DiH3027to the Lordלַיהוָ֨הla.Yah.wehH3068for my sonלִבְנִ֗יliv.NiH1121to makeלַֽעֲשׂוֹת֙la.'a.sOtH6213a gravenH6459imageפֶּ֣סֶלPe.selH6459and a moltenוּמַסֵּכָ֔הu.ma.se.KhahH4541imageH4541;nowוְעַתָּ֖הve.'a.TahH6258therefore, I will returnאֲשִׁיבֶ֥נּוּ'a.shi.Ve.nuH7725them to you.”

4So when he returnedוַיָּ֥שֶׁבvai.Ya.shevH7725the silverהַכֶּ֖סֶףha.Ke.sefH3701to his motherלְאִמּ֑וֹle.'i.MoH517,his motherאִמּוֹ֩'i.MoH517tookוַתִּקַּ֣חva.ti.KachH3947two hundredמָאתַ֨יִםma.Ta.yimH3967piecesof silverכֶּ֜סֶףKe.sefH3701and gaveוַתִּתְּנֵ֣הוּva.ti.te.Ne.huH5414them to the silversmithלַצּוֹרֵ֗ףla.tzo.RefH6884who madeוַֽיַּעֲשֵׂ֙הוּ֙vai.ya.'a.Se.huH6213them into a gravenH6459imageפֶּ֣סֶלPe.selH6459and a moltenוּמַסֵּכָ֔הu.ma.se.KhahH4541imageH4541, andthey were in the houseבְּבֵ֥יתbe.VeitH1004of Micahמִיכָֽיְהוּ׃mi.Kha.ye.huH4321.

5And the manוְהָאִ֣ישׁve.ha.'IshH376Micahמִיכָ֔הmi.KhahH4318had ashrineבֵּ֣ית אֱלֹהִ֑יםbeit 'E.lo.HimH1004 H430and he madeוַיַּ֤עַשׂvai.Ya.'asH6213anephodאֵפוֹד֙'e.fOdH646andhouseholdH8655idolsH8655andconsecratedוַיְמַלֵּ֗א יַ֤דvay.ma.Le' yadH4390 H3027oneאַחַד֙'a.ChadH259of his sonsמִבָּנָ֔יוmi.ba.NavH1121,that he might becomeוַיְהִי־vay.hi-H1961his priestלְכֹהֵֽן׃le.kho.HenH3548.

6In thoseהָהֵ֔םha.HemH1992daysבַּיָּמִ֣יםbai.ya.MimH3117thereH369was noH369kingמֶ֖לֶךְMe.lekhH4428in Israelבְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לbe.Yis.ra.'ElH3478;everyH376manH376didיַעֲשֶֽׂה׃ פya.'a.SehH6213whatH3477was rightהַיָּשָׁ֥רhai.ya.SharH3477in his own eyesבְּעֵינָ֖יוbe.'ei.NavH5869.

7Now there was a youngנַ֗עַרNa.'arH5288manH5288fromBethlehemH1035in Judahיְהוּדָ֔הye.hu.DahH3063,of the familyמִמִּשְׁפַּ֖חַתmi.mish.Pa.chatH4940of Judahיְהוּדָ֑הye.hu.DahH3063,whoH1931was a Leviteלֵוִ֖יle.ViH3881; and he wasstayingגָֽר־gar-H1481thereשָֽׁם׃ShamH8033.

8Then the manהָאִ֜ישׁha.'IshH376departedוַיֵּ֨לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980from the cityמֵהָעִ֗ירme.ha.'IrH5892,from BethlehemH1035in Judahיְהוּדָ֔הye.hu.DahH3063, tostayלָג֖וּרla.GurH1481whereverבַּאֲשֶׁ֣רba.'a.SherH834he might findיִמְצָ֑אyim.Tza'H4672a place;and as he madeלַעֲשׂ֥וֹתla.'a.SotH6213his journeyדַּרְכּֽוֹ׃dar.KoH1870,he cameוַיָּבֹ֧אvai.ya.Vo'H935to thehillהַר־har-H2022countryH2022of Ephraimאֶפְרַ֛יִם'ef.Ra.yimH669to the houseבֵּ֥יתbeitH1004of Micahמִיכָ֖הmi.KhahH4318.

9Micahמִיכָ֖הmi.KhahH4318saidוַיֹּאמֶר־vai.yo.mer-H559to him, “Whereמֵאַ֣יִןme.'A.yinH370do you comeתָּב֑וֹאta.Vo'H935from?” And he saidוַיֹּ֨אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to him, “I am a Leviteלֵוִ֣יle.ViH3881from BethlehemH1035in Judahיְהוּדָ֔הye.hu.DahH3063,and I am goingהֹלֵ֔ךְho.LekhH1980tostayלָג֖וּרla.GurH1481whereverבַּאֲשֶׁ֥רba.'a.SherH834I may findאֶמְצָֽא׃'em.Tza'H4672a place.”

10Micahמִיכָ֜הmi.KhahH4318then saidוַיֹּאמֶר֩vai.yo.MerH559to him, “Dwellשְׁבָ֣הshe.VahH3427with me and bea fatherלְאָ֣בle.'AvH1and a priestוּלְכֹהֵן֒u.le.kho.HenH3548to me, and I will giveאֶֽתֶּן־'e.ten-H5414you tenעֲשֶׂ֤רֶת'a.Se.retH6235piecesof silverכֶּ֙סֶף֙ke.sefH3701a yearלַיָּמִ֔יםlai.ya.MimH3117,a suitוְעֵ֥רֶךְve.'E.rekhH6187of clothesבְּגָדִ֖יםbe.ga.DimH899,and your maintenanceוּמִחְיָתֶ֑ךָu.mich.ya.Te.khaH4241.”So the Leviteהַלֵּוִֽי׃ha.le.ViH3881wentוַיֵּ֖לֶךְvai.Ye.lekhH1980in.

11The Leviteהַלֵּוִ֖יha.le.ViH3881agreedוַיּ֥וֹאֶלvai.Yo.'elH2974to liveלָשֶׁ֣בֶתla.She.vetH3427with the manהָאִ֑ישׁha.'IshH376,and the youngהַנַּ֙עַר֙ha.Na.'arH5288manH5288becameוַיְהִ֤יvay.HiH1961to him like oneכְּאַחַ֖דke.'a.ChadH259of his sonsמִבָּנָֽיו׃mi.ba.NavH1121.

12So Micahמִיכָה֙mi.KhahH4318consecratedוַיְמַלֵּ֤א יַ֣דvay.ma.Le' yadH4390 H3027the Leviteהַלֵּוִ֔יha.le.ViH3881,and the youngהַנַּ֖עַרha.Na.'arH5288manH5288becameוַיְהִי־vay.hi-H1961his priestלְכֹהֵ֑ןle.kho.HenH3548andlivedוַיְהִ֖יvay.HiH1961in the houseבְּבֵ֥יתbe.VeitH1004of Micahמִיכָֽה׃mi.KhahH4318.

13Then Micahמִיכָ֔הmi.KhahH4318saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Nowעַתָּ֣ה'a.TahH6258I knowיָדַ֔עְתִּיya.Da'.tiH3045that the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068will prosperיֵיטִ֥יבyei.TivH3190me, seeingH3588I haveהָיָה־ha.yah-H1961a Leviteהַלֵּוִ֖יha.le.ViH3881as priestלְכֹהֵֽן׃le.kho.HenH3548.”
