1Now the menוְאִ֣ישׁve.'IshH376of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478had swornנִשְׁבַּ֥עnish.Ba'H7650in Mizpahבַּמִּצְפָּ֖הba.mitz.PahH4709,sayingלֵאמֹ֑רle.MorH559, “Noneאִ֣ישׁ לֹא־'ish lo'-H376H3808of us shall giveיִתֵּ֥ןyi.TenH5414his daughterבִּתּ֛וֹbi.ToH1323to Benjaminלְבִנְיָמִ֖ןle.vin.ya.MinH1144in marriageלְאִשָּֽׁה׃le.'i.ShahH802.”
2So the peopleהָעָם֙ha.'AmH5971cameוַיָּבֹ֤אvai.ya.Vo'H935to BethelH1008and satוַיֵּ֤שְׁבוּvai.Ye.she.vuH3427thereשָׁם֙shamH8033beforeלִפְנֵ֖יlif.NeiH6440Godהָאֱלֹהִ֑יםha.'E.lo.HimH430untilעַד־'ad-H5704eveningהָעֶ֔רֶבha.'E.revH6153,and liftedוַיִּשְׂא֣וּvai.yis.'UH5375up their voicesקוֹלָ֔םko.LamH6963and weptוַיִּבְכּ֖וּvai.yiv.KuH1058bitterlyבְּכִ֥י גָדֽוֹל׃be.Khi ga.DolH1419H1065.
3They saidוַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּvai.Yo.me.RuH559, “Whyלָמָ֗הla.MahH4100, O Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068,Godאֱלֹהֵ֣י'e.lo.HeiH430of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478,has thisH2088comeהָ֥יְתָהHa.ye.tahH1961about in Israelבְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑לbe.Yis.ra.'ElH3478,so that oneאֶחָֽד׃'e.ChadH259tribeשֵׁ֥בֶטShe.vetH7626should be missingtodayהַיּ֛וֹםhai.YomH3117in Israelמִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֖לmi.Yis.ra.'ElH3478?”
4It cameוַֽיְהִי֙vay.HiH1961about the nextמִֽמָּחֳרָ֔תmi.mo.cho.RatH4283dayH4283that the peopleהָעָ֔םha.'AmH5971aroseH7925earlyוַיַּשְׁכִּ֣ימוּvai.yash.Ki.muH7925and builtוַיִּבְנוּ־vai.yiv.nu-H1129an altarמִזְבֵּ֑חַmiz.Be.achH4196thereשָׁ֖םshamH8033and offeredוַיַּעֲל֥וּvai.ya.'a.LuH5927burntעֹל֖וֹתo.LotH5930offeringsH5930and peaceוּשְׁלָמִֽים׃ פu.she.la.MimH8002offeringsH8002.
5Then the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478saidוַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙vai.yo.me.RuH559, “Whoמִ֠יmiH4310is there amongH4480allמִכָּל־mi.kolH3605the tribesשִׁבְטֵ֥יshiv.TeiH7626of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֖לYis.ra.'ElH3478whoאֲשֶׁ֨ר'a.SherH834did not comeעָלָ֧ה'a.LahH5927up in the assemblyבַקָּהָ֛לva.ka.HalH6951to the Lordיְהוָ֑הYah.wehH3068?” Forthey had takenהָיְתָ֗הha.ye.TahH1961a greatהַגְּדוֹלָ֜הha.ge.do.LahH1419oathהַשְּׁבוּעָ֨הha.she.vu.'AhH7621concerning himwhoלַ֠אֲשֶׁרLa.'a.SherH834did not comeעָלָ֨ה'a.LahH5927up to the Lordיְהוָ֧הYah.wehH3068at Mizpahהַמִּצְפָּ֛הha.mitz.PahH4709,sayingלֵאמֹ֖רle.MorH559, “He shall surelyH4191be putH4191to deathH4191.”
6And the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478were sorryוַיִּנָּֽחֲמוּ֙vai.yi.na.cha.MuH5162for their brotherאָחִ֑יו'a.ChivH251Benjaminבִּנְיָמִ֖ןbin.ya.MinH1144and saidוַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּvai.Yo.me.RuH559, “Oneאֶחָ֖ד'e.ChadH259tribeשֵׁ֥בֶטShe.vetH7626is cutנִגְדַּ֥עnig.Da'H1438offH1438from Israelמִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל׃mi.Yis.ra.'ElH3478todayהַיּ֛וֹםhai.YomH3117.
7Whatמַה־mah-H4100shall we doנַּעֲשֶׂ֥הna.'a.SehH6213for wivesלְנָשִׁ֑יםle.na.ShimH802for thoseH1992who are leftלַנּוֹתָרִ֖יםla.no.ta.RimH3498, since we haveswornנִשְׁבַּ֣עְנוּnish.Ba'.nuH7650by the Lordבַֽיהוָ֔הba.Yah.wehH3068not to giveתֵּת־tet-H5414them anyH4480of our daughtersמִבְּנוֹתֵ֖ינוּmi.be.no.Tei.nuH1323in marriageלְנָשִֽׁים׃le.na.ShimH802?”
Provision for Their Survival
8And they saidוַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּvai.Yo.me.RuH559, “Whatמִ֗יMiH4310oneאֶחָד֙'e.ChadH259is there of the tribesמִשִּׁבְטֵ֣יmi.shiv.TeiH7626of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵ֔לYis.ra.'ElH3478whoאֲשֶׁ֛ר'a.SherH834did not comeעָלָ֥ה'a.LahH5927up to the Lordיְהוָ֖הYah.wehH3068at Mizpahהַמִּצְפָּ֑הha.mitz.PahH4709?”And beholdוְ֠הִנֵּהVe.hi.nehH2009,noH3808oneאִ֧ישׁ'ishH376had comeבָא־va'-H935to the campהַֽמַּחֲנֶ֛הha.ma.cha.NehH4264from Jabesh-gileadמִיָּבֵ֥ישׁ גִּלְעָ֖דmi.ya.Veish gil.'AdH3003H1568to the assemblyהַקָּהָֽל׃ha.ka.HalH6951.
10And the congregationהָעֵדָ֗הha.'e.DahH5712sentוַיִּשְׁלְחוּ־vai.yish.le.chu-H797112,000שְׁנֵים־ עָשָׂ֥ר אֶ֛לֶףshe.neim- 'a.Sar 'E.lefH8147H6240H505of the valiantהֶחָ֑יִלhe.Cha.yilH2428warriorsמִבְּנֵ֣יmi.be.NeiH1121thereשָׁ֣םshamH8033,and commandedוַיְצַוּ֨וּvay.tza.VuH6680them, sayingלֵאמֹ֗רle.MorH559, “Goלְ֠כוּLe.khuH1980andstrikeוְהִכִּיתֶ֞םve.hi.ki.TemH5221the inhabitantsיוֹשְׁבֵ֨יyo.she.VeiH3427of Jabesh-gileadיָבֵ֤שׁ גִּלְעָד֙ya.Vesh gil.'AdH3003H1568with the edgeלְפִי־le.fi-H6310of the swordחֶ֔רֶבChe.revH2719,with the womenוְהַנָּשִׁ֖יםve.ha.na.ShimH802and the littleוְהַטָּֽף׃ve.ha.TafH2945onesH2945.
11Thisוְזֶ֥הve.ZehH2088is the thingהַדָּבָ֖רha.da.VarH1697that you shall doתַּעֲשׂ֑וּta.'a.SuH6213: youshall utterlyH2763destroyתַּחֲרִֽימוּ׃ta.cha.Ri.muH2763everyכָּל־kol-H3605manזָכָ֗רza.KharH2145and everyוְכָל־ve.kholH3605womanאִשָּׁ֛ה'i.ShahH802who haslainיֹדַ֥עַת מִשְׁכַּב־yo.Da.'at mish.kav-H3045H4904with a manזָכָ֖רza.KharH2145.”
12And they foundוַֽיִּמְצְא֞וּvai.yim.tze.'UH4672amongH4480the inhabitantsמִיּוֹשְׁבֵ֣י׀mi.yo.she.VeiH3427of Jabesh-gileadיָבֵ֣ישׁ גִּלְעָ֗דya.Veish gil.'AdH3003H1568400אַרְבַּ֤ע מֵאוֹת֙'ar.Ba' me.'OtH702H3967youngנַעֲרָ֣הna.'a.RahH5291virginsבְתוּלָ֔הve.tu.LahH1330whoאֲשֶׁ֧ר'a.SherH834had not knownיָדְעָ֛הya.de.'AhH3045a manאִ֖ישׁ'ishH376by lyingלְמִשְׁכַּ֣בle.mish.KavH4904withhim; and they broughtוַיָּבִ֨יאוּvai.ya.Vi.'uH935them to the campהַֽמַּחֲנֶה֙ha.ma.cha.NehH4264at Shilohשִׁלֹ֔הshi.LohH7887,whichאֲשֶׁ֖ר'a.SherH834is in the landבְּאֶ֥רֶץbe.'E.retzH776of Canaanכְּנָֽעַן׃ סke.Na.'anH3667.
13Then the wholeכָּל־kol-H3605congregationהָ֣עֵדָ֔הha.'e.DahH5712sentוַֽיִּשְׁלְחוּ֙vai.yish.le.ChuH7971wordand spokeוַֽיְדַבְּרוּ֙vay.da.be.RuH1696to the sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Benjaminבִנְיָמִ֔ןvin.ya.MinH1144whoאֲשֶׁ֖ר'a.SherH834wereat the rockבְּסֶ֣לַעbe.Se.la'H5553of Rimmonרִמּ֑וֹןri.MonH7417, andproclaimedוַיִּקְרְא֥וּvai.yik.re.'UH7121peaceשָׁלֽוֹם׃sha.LomH7965to them.
14Benjaminבִּנְיָמִן֙bin.ya.MinH1144returnedוַיָּ֤שָׁבvai.Ya.shovH7725at that timeבָּעֵ֣תba.'EtH6256,and they gaveוַיִּתְּנ֤וּvai.yi.te.NuH5414them the womenהַנָּשִׁ֔יםha.na.ShimH802whomאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834they had keptH2421aliveחִיּ֔וּchi.YuH2421from the womenמִנְּשֵׁ֖יmi.ne.SheiH802of Jabesh-gileadיָבֵ֣שׁ גִּלְעָ֑דya.Vesh gil.'AdH3003H1568; yet theywere not enoughכֵּֽן׃KenH3651for them.
16Then the eldersזִקְנֵ֣יzik.NeiH2205of the congregationהָעֵדָ֔הha.'e.DahH5712saidוַיֹּֽאמְר֨וּvai.yo.me.RuH559, “WhatH4310shall we doנַּעֲשֶׂ֥הna.'a.SehH6213for wivesלְנָשִׁ֑יםle.na.ShimH802for those who are leftלַנּוֹתָרִ֖יםla.no.ta.RimH3498,sinceכִּֽי־ki-H3588the womenאִשָּֽׁה׃'i.ShahH802are destroyedנִשְׁמְדָ֥הnish.me.DahH8045out of Benjaminמִבִּנְיָמִ֖ןmi.bin.ya.MinH1144?”
17They saidוַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּvai.Yo.me.RuH559, “There must bean inheritanceיְרֻשַּׁ֥תye.ru.ShatH3425for the survivorsפְּלֵיטָ֖הpe.lei.TahH6413of Benjaminלְבִנְיָמִ֑ןle.vin.ya.MinH1144,soוְלֹֽא־ve.lo'-H3808that a tribeשֵׁ֖בֶטShe.vetH7626will not be blottedיִמָּחֶ֥הyi.ma.ChehH4229out from Israelמִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל׃mi.Yis.ra.'ElH3478.
18But we cannotלֹ֥א נוּכַ֛לlo' nu.KhalH3201H3808giveלָתֵת־la.tet-H5414them wivesנָשִׁ֖יםna.ShimH802of our daughtersמִבְּנוֹתֵ֑ינוּmi.be.no.Tei.nuH1323.”For the sonsבְנֵֽי־ve.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙Yis.ra.'ElH3478had swornנִשְׁבְּע֤וּnish.be.'UH7650,sayingלֵאמֹ֔רle.MorH559, “Cursedאָר֕וּר'a.RurH779is he who givesנֹתֵ֥ןno.TenH5414a wifeאִשָּׁ֖ה'i.ShahH802to Benjaminלְבִנְיָמִֽן׃ סle.vin.ya.MinH1144.”
19So they saidוַיֹּאמְר֡וּvai.yo.me.RuH559, “Beholdהִנֵּה֩hi.NehH2009,there is a feastחַג־chag-H2282of the Lordיְהוָ֨הYah.wehH3068from yearמִיָּמִ֣ים׀mi.ya.MimH3117to yearיָמִ֗ימָהya.Mi.mahH3117inShilohבְּשִׁל֜וֹbe.shi.LoH7887,whichאֲשֶׁ֞ר'a.SherH834is on the northH6828sideH6828of BethelH1008,on the eastH4217H8121sideH4217H8121of the highwayלִמְסִלָּ֔הlim.si.LahH4546that goesהָעֹלָ֥הha.'o.LahH5927up from BethelH1008to Shechemשְׁכֶ֑מָהshe.Khe.mahH7927,and on the southוּמִנֶּ֖גֶבu.mi.Ne.gevH5045sideH5045of Lebonahלִלְבוֹנָֽה׃lil.vo.NahH3829.”
21and watchוּרְאִיתֶ֗םu.re.'i.TemH7200;and beholdוְ֠הִנֵּהVe.hi.nehH2009,ifאִם־'im-H518the daughtersבְנוֹת־ve.not-H1323of Shilohשִׁילוֹ֮shi.LoH7887comeיֵ֨צְא֥וּye.tze.'UH3318out totakeH2342partH2342in the dancesבַּמְּחֹלוֹת֒ba.me.cho.lOtH4246,then you shall comeוִֽיצָאתֶם֙vi.tza.TemH3318out of the vineyardsהַכְּרָמִ֔יםha.ke.ra.MimH3754and eachאִ֥ישׁ'ishH376of you shall catchוַחֲטַפְתֶּ֥םva.cha.taf.TemH2414his wifeאִשְׁתּ֖וֹ'ish.ToH802from the daughtersמִבְּנ֣וֹתmi.be.NotH1323of Shilohשִׁיל֑וֹshi.LoH7887,and goוַהֲלַכְתֶּ֖םva.ha.lakh.TemH1980to the landאֶ֥רֶץ'E.retzH776of Benjaminבִּנְיָמִֽן׃bin.ya.MinH1144.
22It shall comeוְהָיָ֡הve.ha.YahH1961about, whenכִּֽי־ki-H3588their fathersאֲבוֹתָם֩'a.vo.TamH1orא֨וֹ'oH176their brothersאֲחֵיהֶ֜ם'a.chei.HemH251comeיָבֹ֣אוּya.Vo.'uH935to complainלָרִ֣יבla.rovH7378to us, that we shall sayוְאָמַ֤רְנוּve.'a.Mar.nuH559to them, ‘GiveH2603them to us voluntarilyH2603,becauseכִּ֣יkiH3588we did not takeלָקַ֛חְנוּla.Kach.nuH3947for eachH376manאִ֥ישׁ'ishH376of Benjamina wifeאִשְׁתּ֖וֹ'ish.ToH802in battleבַּמִּלְחָמָ֑הba.mil.cha.MahH4421,norכִּ֣יkiH3588H3808did you giveנְתַתֶּ֥םne.ta.TemH5414them to them, elseyou would nowכָּעֵ֥תka.'EtH6256be guiltyתֶּאְשָֽׁמוּ׃ סte'.Sha.muH816.’”
23The sonsבְּנֵ֣יbe.NeiH1121of Benjaminבִנְיָמִ֔ןvin.ya.MinH1144didוַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־vai.ya.'a.su-H6213soכֵן֙khenH3651,and tookוַיִּשְׂא֤וּvai.yis.'UH5375wivesנָשִׁים֙na.ShimH802according to their numberלְמִסְפָּרָ֔םle.mis.pa.RamH4557from those who dancedהַמְּחֹלְל֖וֹתha.me.cho.le.LotH2342,whomאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834they carriedH1497awayH1497.And they wentוַיֵּלְכ֗וּvai.ye.le.KhuH1980and returnedוַיָּשׁ֙וּבוּ֙vai.ya.Shu.vuH7725to their inheritanceנַ֣חֲלָתָ֔םna.cha.la.TamH5159andrebuiltוַיִּבְנוּ֙vai.yiv.NuH1129the citiesהֶ֣עָרִ֔יםhe.'a.RimH5892and livedוַיֵּשְׁב֖וּvai.ye.she.VuH3427in them.
24The sonsבְּנֵֽי־be.nei-H1121of Israelיִשְׂרָאֵל֙Yis.ra.'ElH3478departedוַיִּתְהַלְּכ֨וּvai.yit.ha.le.KhuH1980from thereמִשָּׁ֤םmi.ShamH8033at that timeבָּעֵ֣תba.'EtH6256,everyH376manH376to his tribeלְשִׁבְט֖וֹle.shiv.ToH7626and familyוּלְמִשְׁפַּחְתּ֑וֹu.le.mish.pach.ToH4940,and eachH376oneH376of them wentוַיֵּצְא֣וּvai.ye.tze.'UH3318out from thereמִשָּׁ֔םmi.ShamH8033to his inheritanceלְנַחֲלָתֽוֹ׃le.na.cha.la.ToH5159.
