Context of Hebrews 4:8
6So we see that there is still a chance for people to go to God's place of rest. But those people who first heard God's message in the wilderness refused to obey him. As a result, they did not arrive in his special place of rest. 7So God chose another time for people to go to his place of rest. He called it ‘Today’. A long time after Moses, David spoke God's message. As we have already seen, he said: ‘You must listen when you hear God speak today. Do not refuse to obey him.’ This shows that Joshua did not bring God's people to the place where they could rest. Later, God had to speak again about another day of rest. 9So we see this: God still has a place ready for his people, where they can rest. They will rest as God rested on the seventh day. 10When God made the world and everything, he rested after he had finished his work. It is the same for everyone who goes to God's place of rest. They too will rest. They will no longer need to work.

Commentaries on Hebrews 4:8
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8For if Jesus had given them rest - It is truly surprising that our translators should have rendered the of the text Jesus, and not Joshua, who is most clearly intended. They must have known that the יהושע Yehoshua of the Hebrew, which we write Joshua, is everywhere rendered , Jesus, by the Septuagint; and it is their reading which the apostle follows. It is true the Septuagint generally write , or ̔ , Jesus Nave, or Jesus, son of Nave, for it is thus they…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8For if Jesus - Margin, “That is, Joshua.” The Syriac renders it, “Joshua the son of Nun.” “Jesus” is the Greek mode of writing “Joshua,” and there can be no doubt that Joshua is here intended. The object is to prove that Joshua did” not” give the people of God such a rest as to make it improper to speak of a “rest” after that time. “If Joshua had given them a complete and final rest; if by his conducting them to the promised land all had been done which…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8Joshua and Jesus share the same name (Greek Iēsous, Hebrew Yehoshua‘). In the Old Testament, it is usually translated as Joshua, and in the New Testament, as Jesus (see also study note on Exodus 17:9). The author is making a wordplay on their shared name. Joshua led God's people into the promised land (Joshua 3–4), but God meant more when he promised rest. Jesus provides God's ultimate rest (Hebrews 3:13–14; 4:3, 9–11, 14–16).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 88. Answer to the objection which might be made to his reasoning, namely, that those brought into Canaan by Joshua (so "Jesus" here means, as in Ac 7:45) did enter the rest of God. If the rest of God meant Canaan, God would not after their entrance into that land, have spoken (or speak [Alford]) of another (future) day of entering the rest.Read the comment
