Hebrews 4:7
7So God chose another time for people to go to his place of rest. He called it ‘Today’. A long time after Moses, David spoke God's message. As we have already seen, he said: ‘You must listen when you hear God speak today. Do not refuse to obey him.’
Hebrews 4:7 in other versions
- King James Version (KJV)Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
- New International Version (NIV)God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”
- English Standard Version (ESV)again he appoints a certain day, "Today," saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts."
- New King James Version (NKJV)again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said: “Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts.”
Context of Hebrews 4:7
5As we have already seen, God said something later about his rest: ‘They will never arrive in my special place of rest.’ 6So we see that there is still a chance for people to go to God's place of rest. But those people who first heard God's message in the wilderness refused to obey him. As a result, they did not arrive in his special place of rest. So God chose another time for people to go to his place of rest. He called it ‘Today’. A long time after Moses, David spoke God's message. As we have already seen, he said: ‘You must listen when you hear God speak today. Do not refuse to obey him.’ 8This shows that Joshua did not bring God's people to the place where they could rest. Later, God had to speak again about another day of rest. 9So we see this: God still has a place ready for his people, where they can rest. They will rest as God rested on the seventh day.

Commentaries on Hebrews 4:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7He limiteth a certain day - The term day signifies not only time in general, but also present time, and a particular space. Day here seems to have the same meaning as rest in some other parts of this verse. The day or time of rest relative to the ancient Jews being over and past, and a long time having elapsed between God's displeasure shown to the disobedient Jews in the wilderness and the days of David, and the true rest not having been enjoyed, God in…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Again, he limiteth - He designates, or definitely mentions. The word rendered “limiteth” - ̔́ horizei- means to “bound,” to set a boundary - as of a field or farm; and then to determine or fix definitely, to designate, appoint. Here it means, that he specifies particularly, or mentions expressly. A certain day - A particular time; he mentions today particularly. That is, in the time of David, he uses the word “today,” as if time was “then” an offer of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7God again designated a certain day as “Today,”: David wrote Psalm 95 long after the events in the wilderness, so God's rest is not just for that earlier generation. The words from Psalm 95:7–8 urge us not to harden our hearts when we hear God's voice, so we can enter the rest that the people in the wilderness missed. This chance is available today (see Hebrews 3:13).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. Again--Anew the promise recurs. Translate as the Greek order is, "He limited a certain day, 'To-day.'" Here Paul interrupts the quotation by, "In (the Psalm of) David saying after so long a time (after five hundred years' possession of Canaan)," and resumes it by, "as it has been said before (so the Greek oldest manuscript, before, namely, He 3:7, 15), To-day if ye hear His voice," &c.
