Titus 1:2-16
2in 1the hope of eternal life, which God, 2who cannot lie, 3promised 45long ages ago, 3but 6at the proper time revealed His word in 7the proclamation 8with which I was entrusted 9according to the commandment of 10God our Savior;
4To 11Titus, 12my true 13son 14in a 15common faith: 16Grace and peace from God the Father and 17Christ Jesus our Savior.
5For this reason I left you in 18Crete, that you would set in order what remains and 19appoint 20elders in every city as I directed you, 6namely, 21if any man is beyond reproach, the 22husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of 23indecent behavior or 24rebellion. 7For the 2526overseer must be beyond reproach as 27God’s steward, not 28self-willed, not quick-tempered, not 29overindulging in wine, not 30a bully, 31not greedy for money, 8but 32hospitable, 33loving what is good, self-controlled, righteous, holy, disciplined, 934holding firmly the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to 35exhort in 36sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict it.
1037For there are many 38rebellious people, 39empty talkers and deceivers, especially 40those of the circumcision, 11who must be silenced because they are upsetting 41whole families, teaching 42things they should not teach 43for the sake of 44dishonest gain. 12One of them, a prophet of their own, said, “45Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13This testimony is true. For this reason 46reprimand them 47severely so that they may be 48sound in the faith, 14not paying attention to Jewish 49myths and 50commandments of men who 51turn away from the truth. 1552To the pure, all things are pure; but 53to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their 54mind and their conscience are defiled. 1655They profess to know God, but by their deeds they 56deny Him, being 57detestable and 58disobedient and 59worthless 60for any good deed.
