Titus 1:2-16
2in 1the hope of eternal life, which God, 2who cannot lie, 3promised 45long ages ago, 3but 6at the proper time manifested, even His word, in 7the proclamation 8with which I was entrusted 9according to the commandment of 10God our Savior,
4To 11Titus, 12my true child 13in a 14common faith: 15Grace and peace from God the Father and 16Christ Jesus our Savior.
5For this reason I left you in 17Crete, that you would set in order what remains and 18appoint 19elders in every city as I directed you, 6namely, 20if any man is above reproach, the 21husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of 22dissipation or 23rebellion. 7For the 2425overseer must be above reproach as 26God’s steward, not 27self-willed, not quick-tempered, not 28addicted to wine, not pugnacious, 29not fond of sordid gain, 8but 30hospitable, 31loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled, 932holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in 33sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.
1034For there are many 35rebellious men, 36empty talkers and deceivers, especially 37those of the circumcision, 11who must be silenced because they are upsetting 38whole families, teaching 39things they should not teach 40for the sake of sordid gain. 12One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, “41Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13This testimony is true. For this reason 42reprove them 43severely so that they may be 44sound in the faith, 14not paying attention to Jewish 45myths and 46commandments of men who 47turn away from the truth. 1548To the pure, all things are pure; but 49to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their 50mind and their conscience are defiled. 1651They profess to know God, but by their deeds they 52deny Him, being 53detestable and 54disobedient and 55worthless 56for any good deed.
