Jonah’s Displeasure Rebuked
2Then heprayedוַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֨לvai.yit.pa.LelH6419to the Lordיְהוָ֜הYah.wehH3068and saidוַיֹּאמַ֗רvai.yo.MarH559, “Pleaseאָנָּ֤ה'a.NahH577 Lordיְהוָה֙Yah.wehH3068,was thisזֶ֣הzehH2088notwhatדְבָרִ֗יde.va.RiH1697I saidH1696whenH5704I was stillH5704in my owncountryאַדְמָתִ֔י'ad.ma.TiH127?Thereforeכֵּ֥ןkenH5921H3651inH6923anticipationH6923of this Ifledלִבְרֹ֣חַliv.Ro.achH1272to Tarshishתַּרְשִׁ֑ישָׁהtar.Shi.shahH8659,sinceH3588I knewיָדַ֗עְתִּיya.Da'.tiH3045that You are agraciousחַנּ֣וּןcha.NunH2587and compassionateוְרַח֔וּםve.ra.ChumH7349Godאֵֽל־'el-H410,slowאֶ֤רֶךְ'E.rekhH750to angerאַפַּ֙יִם֙'a.Pa.yimH639and abundantוְרַב־ve.rav-H7227in mercyחֶ֔סֶדChe.sedH2617,and One who relentsוְנִחָ֖םve.ni.ChamH5162of disasterH7463.
5Then Jonahיוֹנָה֙yo.NahH3124leftוַיֵּצֵ֤אvai.ye.Tze'H3318the cityH5892and satH3427downH3427eastמִקֶּ֣דֶםmi.Ke.demH6924ofit. Thereשָׁ֜םshamH8033he madeוַיַּעַשׂ֩vai.ya.'AsH6213a shelterסֻכָּ֗הsu.KahH5521for himself andsatH3427underתַּחְתֶּ֙יהָ֙tach.Tei.haH8478it in the shadeבַּצֵּ֔לba.TzelH6738,untilעַ֚ד אֲשֶׁ֣ר'ad 'a.SherH5704H834he could seeיִרְאֶ֔הyir.'EhH7200whatמַה־mah-H4100would happenיִּהְיֶ֖הyih.YehH1961in the cityH5892.
6So the Lordיְהוָֽה־Yah.weh-H3068Godאֱ֠לֹהִים'E.lo.HimH430designatedוַיְמַ֣ןvay.ManH4487aplantקִיקָי֞וֹןki.ka.YonH7021,and it grewH5927upH5927overמֵעַ֣לme.'AlH4480H5921Jonahלְיוֹנָ֗הle.yo.NahH3124to be a shadeצֵל֙tzelH6738overעַל־'al-H5921his headרֹאשׁ֔וֹro.ShoH7218, torelieveלְהַצִּ֥ילle.ha.TzilH5337him of his discomfortH7463.And Jonahיוֹנָ֛הyo.NahH3124was overjoyedוַיִּשְׂמַ֥ח שִׂמְחָ֥ה גְדוֹלָֽה׃vai.yis.Mach sim.Chah ge.do.LahH8057H1419H8055aboutעַל־'al-H5921the plantהַקִּֽיקָי֖וֹןha.ki.ka.YonH7021.
7But Godהָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ha.'E.lo.HimH430designatedוַיְמַ֤ןvay.ManH4487a wormH8439when dawnהַשַּׁ֖חַרha.Sha.charH7837cameבַּעֲל֥וֹתba.'a.LotH5927the nextלַֽמָּחֳרָ֑תla.mo.cho.RatH4283dayH4283,and it attackedוַתַּ֥ךְva.TakhH5221the plantהַקִּֽיקָי֖וֹןha.ki.ka.YonH7021and itwitheredוַיִּיבָֽשׁ׃vai.yi.VashH3001.
8And when the sunהַשֶּׁ֗מֶשׁha.She.meshH8121cameכִּזְרֹ֣חַkiz.Ro.achH2224up Godאֱלֹהִ֜ים'E.lo.HimH430designatedוַיְמַ֨ןvay.ManH4487a scorchingחֲרִישִׁ֔יתcha.ri.ShitH2759eastקָדִים֙ka.DimH6921windר֤וּחַRu.achH7307, and thesunהַשֶּׁ֛מֶשׁha.She.meshH8121beatוַתַּ֥ךְva.TakhH5221downעַל־'al-H5921on Jonah’sיוֹנָ֖הyo.NahH3124headרֹ֥אשׁroshH7218so that he becameH5968faintוַיִּתְעַלָּ֑ףvai.yit.'a.LafH5968,and he beggedוַיִּשְׁאַ֤לvai.yish.'AlH7592with allhis soulנַפְשׁוֹ֙naf.ShoH5315to dieלָמ֔וּתla.MutH4191,sayingוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “Deathמוֹתִ֖יmo.TiH4194is betterט֥וֹבTovH2896to me thanH4480lifeH2425!”
9But Godאֱלֹהִים֙'E.lo.HimH430saidוַיֹּ֤אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559to Jonahיוֹנָ֔הyo.NahH3124, “Do you haveH3190a goodH3190reasonH3190to beH2734angryH2734aboutעַל־'al-H5921the plantהַקִּֽיקָי֑וֹןha.ki.ka.YonH7021?”And he saidוַיֹּ֕אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “I haveH3190goodH3190reasonH3190to beH2734angryH2734, evento the pointעַד־'ad-H5704of deathמָֽוֶת׃Ma.vetH4194!”
10Then the Lordיְהוָ֔הYah.wehH3068saidוַיֹּ֣אמֶרvai.Yo.merH559, “You hadH2347compassionחַ֙סְתָּ֙chas.taH2347on the plantהַקִּ֣יקָי֔וֹןha.Ki.ka.YonH7021,for whichאֲשֶׁ֛ר'a.SherH834you did not workעָמַ֥לְתָּ'a.Mal.taH5998and whichyou did not cause to growגִדַּלְתּ֑וֹgi.dal.ToH1431,whichH7945cameהָיָ֖הha.YahH1961up overnightשֶׁבִּן־ לַ֥יְלָהshe.bin- Lay.lahH1121H3915and perishedאָבָֽד׃'a.VadH6overnightוּבִן־ לַ֥יְלָהu.vin- Lay.lahH1121H3915.
11Should I not alsohaveH2347compassionאָח֔וּס'a.ChusH2347on Ninevehנִינְוֵ֖הnin.VehH5210,the greatהַגְּדוֹלָ֑הha.ge.do.LahH1419cityהָעִ֣ירha.'IrH5892in whichאֲשֶׁ֣ר'a.SherH834thereH3426areH3426moreהַרְבֵּה֩har.BehH7235thanH4480120,000מִֽשְׁתֵּים־ עֶשְׂרֵ֨ה רִבּ֜וֹmish.teim- 'es.Reh ri.BoH8147H6240H7239peopleאָדָ֗ם'a.DamH120,whoאֲשֶׁ֤ר'a.SherH834do notknowיָדַע֙ya.Da'H3045the differencebetweenבֵּין־bein-H996their rightיְמִינ֣וֹye.mi.NoH3225handH3225and their leftלִשְׂמֹאל֔וֹlis.mo.LoH8040, as well asmanyרַבָּֽה׃ra.BahH7227animalsוּבְהֵמָ֖הu.ve.he.MahH929?”
