Proverbs 13
Contrast of the Upright and the Wicked
1A 1wise son accepts his father’s discipline, But a 2scoffer does not listen to rebuke.2From the fruit of a person’s mouth he 34enjoys good, But the 5desire of the treacherous is 6violence.3One who 7guards his mouth protects his life; One who 8opens wide his lips 9comes to ruin.4The soul of the 10lazy one craves and gets nothing, But the soul of the diligent is made 11prosperous.5A righteous person 12hates a false statement, But a wicked person 1314acts disgustingly and shamefully.6Righteousness 15guards the 16one whose way is blameless, But wickedness brings the 17sinner to ruin.7There is one who 18pretends to be rich but has nothing; Another pretends to be 19poor, but has great wealth.8The ransom of a person’s life is his wealth, But the poor hears no rebuke.9The 20light of the righteous 21rejoices, But the 22lamp of the wicked goes out.10Through overconfidence 23comes nothing but strife, But wisdom is with those who receive counsel.11Wealth obtained from 24nothing dwindles, But one who gathers 25by labor increases it.12Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But desire 26fulfilled is a tree of life.13One who 27despises the word will do badly, But one who fears the commandment will be 28rewarded.14The 29teaching of the wise is a 30fountain of life, To turn aside from the 31snares of death.1532Good understanding produces favor, But the way of the treacherous is 33their own disaster.16Every 34prudent person acts with knowledge, But a fool 35displays foolishness.17A wicked messenger falls into adversity, But 36a faithful messenger brings healing.18Poverty and shame will come to one who 37neglects 38discipline, But one who complies with rebuke will be honored.19Desire realized is sweet to the soul, But it is an abomination to fools to turn away from evil.2039One who walks with wise people will be wise, But a companion of fools will suffer harm.2140Adversity pursues sinners, But the 41righteous will be rewarded with prosperity.22A good person 42leaves an inheritance to his 43grandchildren, And the 44wealth of a sinner is stored up for the righteous.2345Abundant food is in the uncultivated ground of the poor, But 46it is swept away by injustice.24He who 47withholds his 48rod hates his son, But he who loves him 4950disciplines him diligently.25The 51righteous 52has enough to satisfy his appetite, But the stomach of the 53wicked is in need.
