Matthew 16:13-28
131Now when Jesus came into the region of 2Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that 3the Son of Man is?” 14And they said, “Some say 4John the Baptist; and others, 56Elijah; and still others, 7Jeremiah, or one of the other prophets.” 15He said to them, “But who do you yourselves say that I am?” 16Simon Peter answered, “You are 8the 9Christ, 10the Son of 11the living God.” 17And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, 12Simon 13Barjona, because 14flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18And I also say to you that you are 1516Peter, and upon this 17rock I will build My church; and the gates of 18Hades will not overpower it. 19I will give you 19the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and 20whatever you 21bind on earth 22shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you 23loose on earth 24shall have been loosed in heaven.” 2025Then He gave the disciples strict orders that they were to tell no one that He was 26the 27Christ.
2128From that time 29Jesus began to 30point out to His disciples that it was necessary for Him to go to Jerusalem and to 31suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and to be killed, and to be raised up on the third day. 22And yet Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “32God forbid it, Lord! This shall never 33happen to You!” 23But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, 34Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on 35God’s purposes, but men’s.”
24Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, 36take up his cross, and follow Me. 25For 37whoever wants to save his 38life will lose it; but whoever loses his 39life for My sake will find it. 26For what good will it do a person if he gains the whole world, but 40forfeits his soul? Or what will a person give in exchange for his soul? 27For the 41Son of Man 42is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and 43will then repay every person according to his 44deeds.
28“Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the 45Son of Man 46coming in His kingdom.”
