James 5
Misuse of Riches
11Come now, 2you rich people, 3weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you. 24Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth-eaten. 3Your gold and your silver have corroded, and their corrosion will 5serve as a testimony against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is 6in the last days that you have stored up your treasure! 4Behold, 7the pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and 8the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of 9the Lord 10of armies. 5You have 1112lived for pleasure on the earth and lived luxuriously; you have 13fattened your hearts in 14a day of slaughter. 6You have condemned and 1516put to death 17the righteous person; he offers you no resistance.
Exhortation
7Therefore be patient, 18brothers and sisters, 19until the coming of the Lord. 20The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until 21it gets 22the early and late rains. 823You too be patient; 24strengthen your hearts, for 25the coming of the Lord is 26near. 927Do not 28complain, 29brothers and sisters, against one another, so that you may not be judged; behold, 30the Judge is standing 3132right at the 33door. 10As an example, 34brothers and sisters, of suffering and patience, take 35the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11We count those 36blessed who endured. You have heard of 37the 38endurance of Job and have seen 39the 40outcome of the Lord’s dealings, that 41the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful.
12But above all, 42my brothers and sisters, 43do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but 44your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you do not fall under judgment.
13Is anyone among you 45suffering? 46Then he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to 47sing praises. 14Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for 48the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, 4950anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15and the 51prayer of faith will 5253restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will 54raise him up, and if he has committed sins, 55they will be forgiven him. 16Therefore, 56confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be 57healed. 58A 59prayer of a righteous person, when it is 60brought about, can accomplish much. 17Elijah was 61a man with a nature like ours, and 62he prayed 63earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for 64three years and six months. 18Then he 65prayed again, and 66the sky 67poured rain and the earth produced its fruit.
19My brothers and sisters, 68if anyone among you strays from 69the truth and someone turns him back, 20let him know that the one who has turned a sinner from the error of his way will 70save his soul from death and 71cover a multitude of sins.
