Context of Joshua 10:9
7So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the valiant warriors. 8And the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not fear them, for I have handed them over to you; not one of them will stand against you.” So Joshua came upon them suddenly by marching all night from Gilgal. 10And the Lord brought them into confusion before Israel, and He struck them down in a great defeat at Gibeon, and pursued them by the way of the ascent to Beth-horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah. 11And as they fled from Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth-horon, the Lord hurled large stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died; there were more who died from the hailstones than those whom the sons of Israel killed with the sword.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9Joshua - came unto them suddenly - This he did by a forced march during the night, for he went up from Gilgal all night; from Gilgal to Gibeon was about eighteen or twenty miles; and, having fallen so unexpectedly on these confederate kings, they were immediately thrown into confusion.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-14Verses 7-14 The meanest and most feeble, who have just begun to trust the Lord, are as much entitled to be protected as those who have long and faithfully been his servants. It is our duty to defend the afflicted, who, like the Gibeonites, are brought into trouble on our account, or for the sake of the gospel. Joshua would not forsake his new vassals. How much less shall our true Joshua fail those who trust in Him! We may be wanting in our trust, but our…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9Joshua’s army marched all night to travel the 24 kilometers (15 miles) up difficult passes and steep slopes to reach the plateau. When the sun came up, they attacked the Amorite armies from the east. This meant the sun shone bright towards the Amorites as they faced east to fight. Israel's covenant required the nation to help Gibeon when it asked for help. However, Joshua acted even faster than the treaty required. By defeating the Canaanite army with a…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 99. Joshua therefore came upon them suddenly--This is explained in the following clause, where he is described as having accomplished, by a forced march of picked men, in one night, a distance of twenty-six miles, which, according to the slow pace of Eastern armies and caravans, had formerly been a three days' journey (Jos 9:17).
