Context of Job 18:16
14He is torn from the security of his tent, And they march him before the king of terrors. 15Nothing of his dwells in his tent; Brimstone is scattered on his home. His roots are dried below, And his branch withers above. 17The memory of him perishes from the earth, And he has no name abroad. 18He is driven from light into darkness, And chased from the inhabited world.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16His roots shall be dried up - his branch be cut off - He shall be as utterly destroyed, both in himself, his posterity, and his property, as a tree is whose branches are all lopped off, and whose every root is cut away.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16His roots shall be dried up - Another image of complete desolation - where he is compared to a tree that is dead - a figure whose meaning is obvious, and which often occurs; see Job 15:30, note; Job 8:12-13, notes. Above his branch - Perhaps referring to his children or family. All shall be swept away - an allusion which Job could not well hesitate to apply to himself.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-21Verses 11-21 Bildad describes the destruction wicked people are kept for, in the other world, and which in some degree, often seizes them in this world. The way of sin is the way of fear, and leads to everlasting confusion, of which the present terrors of an impure conscience are earnests, as in Cain and Judas. Miserable indeed is a wicked man's death, how secure soever his life was. See him dying; all that he trusts to for his support shall be taken from…Read the comment
