James 5

Misuse of Riches

11Come now, 2you rich, 3weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you. 24Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth-eaten. 3Your gold and your silver have rusted; and their rust will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is 5in the last days that you have stored up your treasure! 4Behold, 6the pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and 7the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of 8the Lord of 9Sabaoth. 5You have 10lived luxuriously on the earth and led a life of wanton pleasure; you have 11fattened your hearts in 12a day of slaughter. 6You have condemned and 1314put to death 15the righteous man; he does not resist you.

Exhortation

7Therefore be patient, 16brethren, 17until the coming of the Lord. 18The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until 19it gets 20the early and late rains. 821You too be patient; 22strengthen your hearts, for 23the coming of the Lord is 24near. 925Do not 26complain, 27brethren, against one another, so that you yourselves may not be judged; behold, 28the Judge is standing 2930right at the 31door. 10As an example, 32brethren, of suffering and patience, take 33the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11We count those 34blessed who endured. You have heard of 35the 36endurance of Job and have seen 37the 38outcome of the Lord’s dealings, that 39the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful.

12But above all, 40my brethren, 41do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but 42your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment.

13Is anyone among you 43suffering? 44Then he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to 45sing praises. 14Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for 46the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, 4748anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15and the 49prayer 50offered in faith will 5152restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will 53raise him up, and if he has committed sins, 54they will be forgiven him. 16Therefore, 55confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be 56healed. 57The effective 58prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much. 17Elijah was 59a man with a nature like ours, and 60he prayed 61earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for 62three years and six months. 18Then he 63prayed again, and 64the 65sky 66poured rain and the earth produced its fruit.

19My brethren, 67if any among you strays from 68the truth and one turns him back, 20let him know that 69he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will 70save his soul from death and will 71cover a multitude of sins.
