Context of Ezekiel 27:11

9The elders of Gebal and her wise men were with you repairing your leaks; All the ships of the sea and their sailors were with you in order to deal in your merchandise. 10“Persia, Lud, and Put were in your army, your men of war. They hung up shield and helmet on you; they presented your splendor. The sons of Arvad and your army were on your walls, all around, and the Gammadim were in your towers. They hung their shields on your walls all around; they perfected your beauty. 12“Tarshish was your customer because of the abundance of all kinds of wealth; with silver, iron, tin, and lead they paid for your merchandise. 13Javan, Tubal, and Meshech, they were your traders; with human lives and vessels of bronze they paid for your merchandise.

The Vulgate reads Pygmaei, the pygmies, who were fabled to be a little people of a cubit in height, from גמד gomed . a cubit; and are told that this little people were celebrated for their wars with the cranes; but nothing of this kind can enter into this description…Read the comment

• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1111. Gammadims--rather, as the Tyrians were Syro-Phoenicians, from a Syriac root, meaning daring, "men of daring" [Ludovicus De Dieu]. It is not likely the keeping of watch "in the towers" would have been entrusted to foreigners. Others take it from a Hebrew root, "a dagger," or short sword (Jud 3:16), "short-swordsmen."Read the comment
