Context of Ezekiel 27:11
9The elders of Gebal and her skilled men were within you, mending cracks; all the ships of the sea and their mariners were within you to trade for your merchandise. 10Men of Persia, Lud, and Put were in your army, men of war. They hung shield and helmet on you; they gave you your splendor. The Arvadites joined your army on your walls all around, and the Gammadites were in your towers. They hung their quivers on your walls all around; they perfected your beauty. 12“‘Tarshish was your trade partner because of your abundant wealth; they exchanged silver, iron, tin, and lead for your products. 13Javan, Tubal, and Meshech were your clients; they exchanged slaves and bronze items for your merchandise.

The Vulgate reads Pygmaei, the pygmies, who were fabled to be a little people of a cubit in height, from גמד gomed . a cubit; and are told that this little people were celebrated for their wars with the cranes; but nothing of this kind can enter into this description…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1111. Gammadims--rather, as the Tyrians were Syro-Phoenicians, from a Syriac root, meaning daring, "men of daring" [Ludovicus De Dieu]. It is not likely the keeping of watch "in the towers" would have been entrusted to foreigners. Others take it from a Hebrew root, "a dagger," or short sword (Jud 3:16), "short-swordsmen."Read the comment
