Context of Exodus 39:3
1Now from the violet, purple, and scarlet material they made finely woven garments for ministering in the Holy Place, as well as the holy garments which were for Aaron, just as the Lord had commanded Moses. 2He made the ephod of gold and of violet, purple, and scarlet material, and fine twisted linen. Then they hammered out gold sheets and cut them into threads to be woven in with the violet, the purple, and the scarlet material, and the fine linen, the work of a skilled embroiderer. 4They made attaching shoulder pieces for the ephod; it was attached at its two upper ends. 5And the skillfully woven band of its overlay which was on it was like its workmanship, of the same material: of gold and of violet, purple, and scarlet material, and fine twisted linen, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3They did beat the gold into thin plates - For the purpose, as it is supposed, of cutting it into wires (פתילם ) or threads; for to twist or twine is the common acceptation of the root פתל pathal . I cannot suppose that the Israelites had not then the art of making gold thread, as they possessed several ornamental arts much more difficult: but in the present instance, figures made in a more solid form than that which could have been effected by gold…Read the comment

"Cloth of golden tissue is not uncommon on the monuments, and specimens of it have been found rolled about mummies; but it is not easy to determine whether the gold thread was originally interwoven or subsequently inserted by the embroiderer" [Taylor].Read the comment
