Context of Daniel 11:3
1“In the first year of Darius the Mede, I arose to be of assistance and a protection for him. 2And now I will tell you the truth. Behold, three more kings are going to arise in Persia. Then a fourth will gain far more riches than all of them; as soon as he becomes strong through his riches, he will stir up the entire empire against the realm of Greece. And a mighty king will arise, and he will rule with great authority and do as he pleases. 4But as soon as he has arisen, his kingdom will be broken up and parceled out toward the four points of the compass, though not to his own descendants, nor according to his authority which he wielded, because his sovereignty will be removed and given to others besides them. 5“Then the king of the South will grow strong, along with one of his princes who will gain ascendancy over him and rule; his domain will be a great realm indeed.

Commentaries on Daniel 11:3
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3A mighty king shall stand up - This was Alexander the great. It is not said that this mighty king shall stand up against Xerxes, for he was not born till one hundred years after that monarch; but simply that he should stand up, i.e., that he should reign in Greece.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3And a mighty king shall stand up - So far as the language here is concerned, it is not said whether this would be in Persia, as a successor of the “fourth king” Daniel 11:2, or whether it would be in some other part of the world. The next verse, however, shows that the reference is to Alexander the Great - for to no other one is it applicable. There were several monarchs of Persia, indeed, that succeeded Xerxes before the kingdom was invaded and subdued…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3Alexander the Great was a powerful king (see study note on Daniel 8:21) who ruled from 336 to 323 BC. He conquered much of the known world in thirteen years, from Greece to India and from the north to Egypt in the south.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 33. mighty king ... do according to his will--answering to the he-goat's "notable horn" (Da 8:6, 7, 21).
