Context of Daniel 11:3
1In the first year of Darius the Mede, I stood up to strengthen and protect him.) 2Now I will tell you the truth. “Three more kings will arise in Persia, and the fourth will be far richer than the others. By the power he gains through his riches, he will stir up everyone against the kingdom of Greece. Then a warrior king will arise; he will rule a vast realm and do whatever he wants. 4But as soon as he is established, his kingdom will be broken up and divided to the four winds of heaven, but not to his descendants; it will not be the same kingdom that he ruled, because his kingdom will be uprooted and will go to others besides them. 5“The king of the South will grow powerful, but one of his commanders will grow more powerful and will rule a kingdom greater than his.

Commentaries on Daniel 11:3
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3A mighty king shall stand up - This was Alexander the great. It is not said that this mighty king shall stand up against Xerxes, for he was not born till one hundred years after that monarch; but simply that he should stand up, i.e., that he should reign in Greece.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3And a mighty king shall stand up - So far as the language here is concerned, it is not said whether this would be in Persia, as a successor of the “fourth king” Daniel 11:2, or whether it would be in some other part of the world. The next verse, however, shows that the reference is to Alexander the Great - for to no other one is it applicable. There were several monarchs of Persia, indeed, that succeeded Xerxes before the kingdom was invaded and subdued…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3Alexander the Great was a powerful king (see study note on Daniel 8:21) who ruled from 336 to 323 BC. He conquered much of the known world in thirteen years, from Greece to India and from the north to Egypt in the south.Read the comment
