Context of Daniel 11:3
1“And in the first year of Darius the Mede, I took my stand to support and protect him). 2“Now I will declare the truth. Behold, three more kings will arise in Persia. Then a fourth will be far richer than all. When he becomes powerful through his wealth, he will stir up everyone against the realm of Greece. Then a mighty king will arise, who will rule with great authority and do as he pleases. 4But as soon as he has arisen, his kingdom will be broken up and distributed to the four winds of heaven—though it will not go to his descendants, nor will it have the authority he exercised, for his kingdom will be uprooted and given to others besides these. 5“Then the king of the south will become strong, but one of his commanders will become even stronger than he, and he will rule a greater kingdom than his.

Commentaries on Daniel 11:3
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 3A mighty king shall stand up - This was Alexander the great. It is not said that this mighty king shall stand up against Xerxes, for he was not born till one hundred years after that monarch; but simply that he should stand up, i.e., that he should reign in Greece.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3And a mighty king shall stand up - So far as the language here is concerned, it is not said whether this would be in Persia, as a successor of the “fourth king” Daniel 11:2, or whether it would be in some other part of the world. The next verse, however, shows that the reference is to Alexander the Great - for to no other one is it applicable. There were several monarchs of Persia, indeed, that succeeded Xerxes before the kingdom was invaded and subdued…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3Alexander the Great was a powerful king (see study note on Daniel 8:21) who ruled from 336 to 323 BC. He conquered much of the known world in thirteen years, from Greece to India and from the north to Egypt in the south.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 33. mighty king ... do according to his will--answering to the he-goat's "notable horn" (Da 8:6, 7, 21).
