Context of 2 Kings 13:7
5And the Lord gave Israel a savior, so that they escaped from under the hand of the Arameans; and the sons of Israel lived in their tents as previously. 6Nevertheless they did not abandon the sins of the house of Jeroboam, into which he misled Israel; rather, they walked in them; and the Asherah also remained standing in Samaria. For he left to Jehoahaz no more of the army than fifty horsemen, ten chariots, and ten thousand infantry, because the king of Aram had eliminated them and made them like the dust at threshing. 8Now as for the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, and all that he did and his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? 9And Jehoahaz lay down with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria; and his son Joash became king in his place.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7The meaning is that “he, the king of Syria” (2 Kings 13:4 Hazael) limited the standing army of Jehoahaz. Like the dust by threshing - An expression not only employed metaphorically, and importing defeat, conquest, and grinding oppression Jeremiah 51:33; Micah 4:12, but implying also the literal use of threshing-instruments in the execution of prisoners of war (marginal reference, and compare 2 Samuel 12:31).Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7Years of Aramean attacks weakened Israel's army. Only God could prevent Israel's destruction (2 Kings 13:4–5). In the end, only God can save humanity when it is helpless and lost (Psalm 35:10; Romans 5:6–8).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. made them like the dust in threshing--Threshing in the East is performed in the open air upon a level plot of ground, daubed over with a covering to prevent, as much as possible, the earth, sand, or gravel from rising; a great quantity of them all, notwithstanding this precaution, must unavoidably be taken up with the grain; at the same time the straw is shattered to pieces.
