1 Timothy 3:2-13
212An overseer, then, must be above reproach, 3the husband of one wife, 45temperate, self-controlled, respectable, 6hospitable, 7skillful in teaching, 38not overindulging in wine, not 9a bully, but gentle, not contentious, 10free from the love of money. 4He must be one who 11manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity 5(but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of 12the church of God?), 6and not a new convert, so that he will not become 13conceited and fall into 14condemnation 15incurred by the devil. 7And he must 16have a good reputation with 17those outside the church, so that he will not fall into 18disgrace and 19the snare of the devil.
820Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not 21insincere, 22not prone to drink much wine, 23not greedy for money, 924but holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 1025These men must also first be tested; then have them serve as deacons if they are beyond reproach. 1126Women must likewise be dignified, 27not malicious gossips, but 2829temperate, faithful in all things. 1230Deacons must be 31husbands of one wife, and 3233good managers of their children and their own households. 13For those who have served well as deacons 34obtain for themselves a 35high standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
