Context of 1 Samuel 16:5
3And you shall invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will let you know what you shall do; and you shall anoint for Me the one whom I designate to you.” 4So Samuel did what the Lord told him, and he came to Bethlehem. Then the elders of the city came trembling to meet him and said, “Do you come in peace?” And he said, “In peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” He also consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6When they entered, he looked at Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is standing before Him.” 7But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God does not see as man sees, since man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5Consecrate yourselves: Self-purification involved bathing and avoiding sexual activity (see Exodus 19:10–15; compare Genesis 35:2–4). The sacrifice probably happened the next morning (see Numbers 11:18; Joshua 3:5; 7:13–14). Samuel conducted the purification ritual for Jesse and his sons to prepare them for the sacrifice and the anointing of the new king (compare Exodus 19:10; Joshua 3:5).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. sanctify yourselves--by the preparations described (Ex 19:14, 15). The elders were to sanctify themselves. Samuel himself took the greatest care in the sanctification of Jesse's family. Some, however, think that the former were invited only to join in the sacrifice, while the family of Jesse were invited by themselves to the subsequent feast.Read the comment
