Jephthah Defeats Ephraim

1Then the menH376 of EphraimH669 assembledH6817 and crossedH5674 the Jordan to ZaphonH6828. They saidH559 to JephthahH3316, “WhyH4069 have you crossed overH5674 to fightH3898 the AmmonitesH1121H5983 withoutH3808 calling usH7121 to goH1980 with youH5973? We will burn your houseH1004 downH8313H5921 with you insideH784!”

2But JephthahH3316 repliedH559, “My peopleH5971 and IH589 hadH1961 a seriousH3966 conflictH7379 with the AmmonitesH1121H5983, and when I calledH2199, you did notH3808 saveH3467 meH853 out of their handsH3027. 3When I sawH7200 thatH3588 you would notH369 save meH3467, I riskedH7760H3709 my lifeH5315 and crossed overH5674 toH413 the AmmonitesH1121H5983, and the LORDH3068 delivered themH5414 into my handH3027. Why thenH4100 have you comeH5927H413 todayH3117H2088 to fightH3898 against me?”

4Jephthah thenH3316 gatheredH6908 allH3605 the menH582 of GileadH1568 and foughtH3898 againstH854 EphraimH669. And the menH582 of GileadH1568 struck them downH5221 becauseH3588 the EphraimitesH669 had saidH559, “YouH859 GileaditesH1568 are fugitivesH6412 in EphraimH669, living in the territoriesH8432 of EphraimH669H8432 and ManassehH4519.”

5The GileaditesH1568 capturedH3920 the fordsH4569 of the JordanH3383 leading to EphraimH669, andH1961 wheneverH3588 a fugitiveH6412 from EphraimH669 would sayH559, “Let me cross overH5674,” the GileaditesH1568 would askH559 himH582, “Are youH859 an EphraimiteH673?”

If he answeredH559, “NoH3808,” 6they toldH559 him, “PleaseH4994 sayH559 ShibbolethH7641.”

If he saidH559, “SibbolethH5451,” because he couldH3559 notH3808 pronounceH1696 it correctlyH3651, they seizedH270 himH853 and killed himH7819 atH413 the fordsH4569 of the JordanH3383. So at thatH1931 timeH6256 42,000H705H8147H505 EphraimitesH669 were killedH5307.

7JephthahH3316 judgedH8199 IsraelH3478 sixH8337 yearsH8141, and when heH3316H1569 diedH4191, he was buriedH6912 in one of the citiesH5892 of GileadH1568.1

Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon

8After JephthahH310, IbzanH78 ofH1035 BethlehemH1035 judgedH8199 IsraelH3478. 9He hadH1961 thirtyH7970 sonsH1121, as well as thirtyH7970 daughtersH1323 whom he gave in marriageH7971 to men outside his clanH2351; and for his sonsH1121 he brought backH935 thirtyH7970 wivesH1323 fromH4480 elsewhereH2351. Ibzan judgedH8199 IsraelH3478 sevenH7651 yearsH8141. 10Then IbzanH78 diedH4191, and he was buriedH6912 in BethlehemH1035.

11After IbzanH310, ElonH356 the ZebuluniteH2075 judgedH8199 IsraelH3478 tenH6235 yearsH8141. 12Then ElonH356 the ZebuluniteH2075 diedH4191, and he was buriedH6912 in AijalonH357 in the landH776 of ZebulunH2074.

13After ElonH310, AbdonH5658 sonH1121 of HillelH1985, from PirathonH6553, judgedH8199 IsraelH3478. 14He hadH1961 fortyH705 sonsH1121 and thirtyH7970 grandsonsH1121, who rodeH7392 onH5921 seventyH7657 donkeysH5895. And he judgedH8199 IsraelH3478 eightH8083 yearsH8141. 15Then AbdonH5658 sonH1121 of HillelH1985, from PirathonH6553, diedH4191, and he was buriedH6912 at PirathonH6552 inH776 EphraimH669, in the hill countryH2022 of the AmalekitesH6003.
