3And you will crush the wicked underfoot, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day that I am preparing,” says the Lord of armies. 4“Remember the Law of Moses My servant, the statutes and ordinances which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel. “Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord. 6He will turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and strike the land with complete destruction.”

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet - This is meant alone of John the Baptist, as we learn from Luke 1:17; (note), in whose spirit and power he came.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Behold I will send (I send, as a future, proximate in the prophet‘s mind) you Elijah the prophet - The Archangel Gabriel interprets this for us, to include the sending of John the Immerser. For he not only says Luke 1:17. that he shall “go before” the Lord “in the spirit and power of Elias,” but describes his mission in the characteristic words of Malachi, “to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children:” and those other words also, “and the…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 4-6Verses 4-6 Here is a solemn conclusion, not only of this prophecy, but of the Old Testament. Conscience bids us remember the law. Though we have not prophets, yet, as long as we have Bibles, we may keep up our communion with God. Let others boast in their proud reasoning, and call it enlightening, but let us keep near to that sacred word, through which this Sun of Righteousness shines upon the souls of his people. They must keep up a believing expectation…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-6The second closing message warns that God’s judgment of the wicked is coming. It also promises rescue and restoration for those who live in a right way. Elijah is a prime example of a prophet who preached repentance, supported by signs and wonders (see Luke 1:17; James 5:17–18). Elijah was a forerunner of the day of the Lord (see Malachi 3:1). The New Testament identifies John the Baptist as the prophet who prepared the way for Jesus the Messiah (see…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. I send you Elijah--as a means towards your "remembering the law" (Mal 4:4). the prophet--emphatical; not "the Tishbite"; for it is in his official, not his personal capacity, that his coming is here predicted. In this sense, John the Baptist was an Elijah in spirit (Lu 1:16, 17), but not the literal Elijah; whence when asked, "Art thou Elias?" (Joh 1:21), He answered, "I am not." "Art thou that prophet?" "No." This implies that John, though knowing…Read the comment
