Context of Leviticus 14:39

37So he shall look at the spot, and if the spot on the walls of the house has greenish or reddish depressions and appears deeper than the surface, 38the priest shall come out of the house, to the doorway, and quarantine the house for seven days. Then the priest shall return on the seventh day and make an inspection. If the spot has indeed spread on the walls of the house, 40the priest shall order them to pull out the stones with the spot on them and throw them away at an unclean place outside the city. 41And he shall have the house scraped all around inside, and they shall dump the plaster that they scrape off at an unclean place outside the city.

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 33-53Verses 33-53 This section is separated from that on leprosy in clothing Leviticus 13:47-59 with which it would seem to be naturally connected, and is placed last of all the laws concerning leprosy, probably on account of its being wholly prospective. While the Israelites were in the wilderness, the materials of their dwellings were of nearly the same nature as those of their clothing, and would be liable to the same sort of decay. They were therefore…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 33-53Verses 33-53 The leprosy in a house is unaccountable to us, as well as the leprosy in a garment; but now sin, where that reigns in a house, is a plague there, as it is in a heart. Masters of families should be aware, and afraid of the first appearance of sin in their families, and put it away, whatever it is. If the leprosy is got into the house, the infected part must be taken out. If it remain in the house, the whole must be pulled down. The owner had…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 33-53Rot or mildew contamination made buildings unhealthy or unsafe. People considered these buildings diseased, so they were not whole or ceremonially clean (see study note on Leviticus 11:1–15:33). The inspection and treatment process was similar to the process for mildew in clothing (Leviticus 13:47–59).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 34-4834-48. leprosy in a house--This law was prospective, not to come into operation till the settlement of the Israelites in Canaan. The words, "I put the leprosy," has led many to think that this plague was a judicial infliction from heaven for the sins of the owner; while others do not regard it in this light, it being common in Scripture to represent God as doing that which He only permits in His providence to be done. Assuming it to have been a natural…Read the comment
