Context of Judges 12:7
5And the Gileadites took control of the crossing places of the Jordan opposite Ephraim. And it happened whenever any of the survivors of Ephraim said, “Let me cross over,” that the men of Gilead would say to him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he said, “No,” 6then they would say to him, “Just say, ‘Shibboleth.’” But he said, “Sibboleth,” for he was not prepared to pronounce it correctly. Then they seized him and slaughtered him at the crossing places of the Jordan. So at that time forty-two thousand from Ephraim fell. Jephthah judged Israel for six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in one of the cities of Gilead. 8Now Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel after him. 9He had thirty sons, and thirty daughters whom he gave in marriage outside the family, and he brought in thirty daughters from outside for his sons. And he judged Israel for seven years.

Commentaries on Judges 12:7
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7six years: Like all the judges after Gideon, Jephthah served for a specific and short time (see study note on Judges 8:28). Jephthah received an honorable burial, showing that despite his limitations, he was an inspired and successful warrior (Judges 11:29; contrast with Abimelech, study note on Judges 9:54–55).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. Jephthah died--After a government of six years, this mighty man of valor died; and however difficult it may be for us to understand some passages in his history, he has been ranked by apostolic authority among the worthies of the ancient church. He was followed by a succession of minor judges, of whom the only memorials preserved relate to the number of their families and their state [Jud 12:8-15].Read the comment
