Context of Judges 11:6

4Now it came about, after a while, that the sons of Ammon fought against Israel. 5When the sons of Ammon fought against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob; and they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our leader, that we may fight against the sons of Ammon.” 7But Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Did you not hate me and drive me from my father’s house? So why have you come to me now when you are in trouble?” 8The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “For this reason we have now returned to you, that you may go with us and fight the sons of Ammon, and become our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6Come, and be our captain - The Israelites were assembled in Mizpeh, but were without a captain to lead them against the Ammonites. And we find, from the conclusion of the preceding chapter, that they offered the command to any that would accept it.Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-6These elders were different from Jephthah’s brothers, although Jephthah’s initial response (Judges 11:7) seems to treat them as the same group. They had promised (Judges 10:18) that whoever led the attack against the Ammonites would become the ruler. Here, in typical Middle Eastern bargaining style, they only offered the position of commander, trying to reduce their initial promise.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 5-65-6. the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah--All eyes were directed towards him as the only person possessed of the qualities requisite for the preservation of the country in this time of imminent danger; and a deputation of the chief men was despatched from the Hebrew camp at Mizpeh to solicit his services.Read the comment
