Context of Joshua 14:5
3For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe beyond the Jordan; but he did not give an inheritance to the Levites among them. 4For the sons of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim, and they did not give a portion to the Levites in the land, except cities to live in, with their pasture lands for their livestock and for their property. The sons of Israel did exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses, and they divided the land. 6Then the sons of Judah approached Joshua in Gilgal, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know the word which the Lord spoke to Moses the man of God on account of you and me in Kadesh-barnea. 7I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought word back to him as it was in my heart.

Commentaries on Joshua 14:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5They divided the land - This work was begun some time before at Gilgal, and was finished some time after at Shiloh. It must have required a very considerable time to make all the geographical arrangements that were necessary for this purpose.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-15The allotment of land to the tribes on the west side of the Jordan describes what God intended for each tribe to possess. The one narrating the story begins this section with Caleb receiving land and ends with Joshua receiving land (14:6–15; 19:49–51). Only Caleb and Joshua had shown faith in God that Israel could conquer the land (Numbers 13:30; 14:6–9).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. the children of Israel ... divided the land--that is, they made the preliminary arrangements for the work. A considerable time was requisite for the survey and measurement.Read the comment
