Context of Deuteronomy 26:16
14I have not eaten of it while mourning, nor have I removed any of it while I was unclean, nor offered any of it to the dead. I have listened to the voice of the Lord my God; I have acted in accordance with everything that You have commanded me. 15Look down from Your holy dwelling place, from heaven, and bless Your people Israel, and the ground which You have given us, a land flowing with milk and honey just as You swore to our fathers.’ “This day the Lord your God commands you to perform these statutes and ordinances. Therefore you shall be careful to perform them with all your heart and with all your soul. 17Today you have declared the Lord to be your God, and that you will walk in His ways and keep His statutes, His commandments, and His ordinances, and listen to His voice. 18And the Lord has today declared you to be His people, His personal possession, just as He promised you, and that you are to keep all His commandments;

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16-19Verses 16-19 A brief and earnest exhortation by way of conclusion to the second and longest discourse of the book. Deuteronomy 26:17 Thou hast avouched - literally, “made to say:” so also in the next verse. The sense is: “Thou hast given occasion to the Lord to say that He is thy God,” i. e. by promising that He shall be so. Compare Exodus 24:7; Joshua 24:14-25,Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 16-19Verses 16-19 Moses here enforces the precepts. They are God's laws, therefore thou shalt do them, to that end were they given thee; do them, and dispute them not; do them, and draw not back; do them, not carelessly and hypocritically, but with thy heart and soul, thy whole heart and thy whole soul. We forswear ourselves, and break the most sacred engagement, if, when we have taken the Lord to be our God, we do not make conscience of obeying his commands…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16with all your heart and with all your soul: This Hebrew phrase clearly refers to the Shema, the foundational statement of Israel’s faith and covenant commitment (see 6:4–5 and study notes).
