Context of Daniel 8:23
21The shaggy goat represents the kingdom of Greece, and the large horn that is between his eyes is the first king. 22The broken horn and the four horns that came up in its place represent four kingdoms which will arise from his nation, although not with his power. And in the latter period of their dominion, When the wrongdoers have run their course, A king will arise, Insolent and skilled in intrigue. 24And his power will be mighty, but not by his own power, And he will destroy to an extraordinary degree And be successful and do as he pleases; He will destroy mighty men and the holy people. 25And through his shrewdness He will make deceit a success by his influence; And he will make himself great in his own mind, And he will destroy many while they are at ease. He will even oppose the Prince of princes, But he will be broken without human agency.

Commentaries on Daniel 8:23
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 23When the transgressors are come to the full - When the utmost degradation has taken place, by the buying and selling of the high priesthood; for Onias was ejected for a sum of money, to make room for wicked Jason; and Jason again was supplanted for a greater sum by a worse man, if possible, than himself, Menelaus; and the golden vessels of the temple were sold to pay for this sacrilegious purchase. Thus transgressions were come to the full, before the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 23And in the latter time of their kingdom - When it shall be drawing to an end. All these powers were ultimately absorbed in the Roman power; and the meaning here is, that taking the time from the period of their formation - the division of the empire after the battle of Ipsus (see the notes at Daniel 8:8), until the time when all would be swallowed up in the Roman dominion, what is here stated - to wit, the rise of Antiochus - would be in the latter…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-27Verses 15-27 The eternal Son of God stood before the prophet in the appearance of a man, and directed the angel Gabriel to explain the vision. Daniel's fainting and astonishment at the prospect of evils he saw coming on his people and the church, confirm the opinion that long-continued calamities were foretold. The vision being ended, a charge was given to Daniel to keep it private for the present. He kept it to himself, and went on to do the duty of his…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 23-25The little horn (Daniel 8:9) was a fierce king. This description fits Antiochus IV, who was a ruler from the Seleucid dynasty from 175 to 163 BC (compare Daniel 11:21–45). He called himself "Epiphanes," which means "The Manifest Presence [of God]." But many people, including Jews, mockingly called him "Epimanes," which means "Mad Man." By desecrating the temple and Jewish worship (Daniel 8:11–12), Antiochus tried to destroy Judaism and unify his kingdom…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2323. transgressors are come to the full--This does not hold good of the times of Antiochus, but of the closing times of the Christian era. Compare Lu 18:8, and 2Ti 3:1-9, as to the wickedness of the world in general just before Christ's second coming. Israel's guilt, too, shall then be at the full, when they who rejected Christ shall receive Antichrist; fulfilling Jesus words, "I am come in My Father's name, and ye receive Me not; if another shall come in…Read the comment
