Context of 2 Kings 12:5
3Only the high places did not end; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places. 4Then Jehoash said to the priests, “All the money of the sacred offerings which is brought into the house of the Lord, in current money, both the money of each man’s assessment and all the money which anyone’s heart prompts him to bring into the house of the Lord, the priests are to take it for themselves, each from his acquaintance; and they shall repair damage to the house wherever any damage is found.” 6But it came about that in the twenty-third year of King Jehoash, the priests had not repaired any damage to the house. 7So King Jehoash summoned Jehoiada the priest, and the other priests, and said to them, “Why do you not repair damage to the house? Now then, you are not to take any more money from your acquaintances, but give it up for the damage to the house.”

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4-8Joash ordered the collection of funds from the cities of Judah (2 Chronicles 24:5) for temple repairs. The money came from special Levitical taxes, a census tax (2 Chronicles 24:9), and voluntary donations. After some time, the priests still had not repaired the temple. So Joash took control of the project and assigned others to manage the repairs (see also study note on 2 Chronicles 24:4–8).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-182Ki 12:1-18. Jehoash Reigns Well while Jehoiada Lived. 2. Jehoash did that which was right in the sight of the Lord--so far as related to his outward actions and the policy of his government. But it is evident from the sequel of his history that the rectitude of his administration was owing more to the salutary influence of his preserver and tutor, Jehoiada, than to the honest and sincere dictates of his own mind.Read the comment
