Context of 2 Kings 12:5
3The high places, however, were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there. 4Joash said to the priests, “Collect all the money that is brought as sacred offerings to the temple of the Lord—the money collected in the census, the money received from personal vows and the money brought voluntarily to the temple. Let every priest receive the money from one of the treasurers, then use it to repair whatever damage is found in the temple.” 6But by the twenty-third year of King Joash the priests still had not repaired the temple. 7Therefore King Joash summoned Jehoiada the priest and the other priests and asked them, “Why aren’t you repairing the damage done to the temple? Take no more money from your treasurers, but hand it over for repairing the temple.”

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4-8Joash ordered the collection of funds from the cities of Judah (2 Chronicles 24:5) for temple repairs. The money came from special Levitical taxes, a census tax (2 Chronicles 24:9), and voluntary donations. After some time, the priests still had not repaired the temple. So Joash took control of the project and assigned others to manage the repairs (see also study note on 2 Chronicles 24:4–8).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-182Ki 12:1-18. Jehoash Reigns Well while Jehoiada Lived. 2. Jehoash did that which was right in the sight of the Lord--so far as related to his outward actions and the policy of his government. But it is evident from the sequel of his history that the rectitude of his administration was owing more to the salutary influence of his preserver and tutor, Jehoiada, than to the honest and sincere dictates of his own mind.Read the comment
