Context of 2 Chronicles 9:13

11From the algum trees the king made steps to the house of the Lord and for the king’s palace, and lyres and harps for the singers; and nothing like them was seen before in the land of Judah. 12King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba her every desire, whatever she requested, besides gifts equal to what she had brought to the king. Then she turned and went to her own land with her servants. Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was 666 talents of gold, 14besides what the traders and merchants brought; and all the kings of Arabia and the governors of the country brought gold and silver to Solomon. 15King Solomon made two hundred large shields of beaten gold, using six hundred shekels of beaten gold on each large shield.

Commentaries on 2 Chronicles 9:13

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-31Verses 13-31 The imports here mentioned, would show that prosperity drew the minds of Solomon and his subjects to the love of things curious and uncommon, though useless in themselves. True wisdom and happiness are always united together; but no such alliance exists between wealth and the enjoyment of the things of this life. Let us then acquaint ourselves with the Saviour, that we may find rest for our souls. Here is Solomon reigning in wealth and power…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13-14The phrase "translated each year" can also mean one specific year. This makes it unclear if 25 tons referred to Solomon's yearly income or just his best year. Solomon also collected taxes from foreign traders and local merchants. The kings of Arabia were likely merchant leaders who used the routes from Edom to Damascus. The governors of the provinces were district officials.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1313. Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year--(See on 1Ki 10:14-29). six hundred and threescore and six talents of gold--The sum named is equal to £3,646,350; and if we take the proportion of silver (2Ch 9:14), which is not taken into consideration, at one to nine, there would be about £200,000, making a yearly supply of nearly £6,000,000, being a vast amount for an infant effort in maritime commerce [Napier].Read the comment
