1 Thessalonians 5

The Day of the Lord

1Now as to the 1periods and 2times, brothers and sisters, you 3have no need of anything to be written to you. 2For you yourselves know full well that 4the day of the Lord is coming 5just like a thief in the night. 3While they are saying, “6Peace and safety!” then 7sudden destruction 8will come upon them like 9labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4But you, brothers and sisters, are not in 10darkness, so that the day would overtake you 1112like a thief; 5for you are all 13sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of 14darkness; 6so then, let’s not 15sleep as 1617others do, but let’s be alert and 1819sober. 7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who are drunk, 20get drunk at night. 8But since 21we are of the day, let’s 22be 23sober, having put on the 24breastplate of 25faith and love, and as a 26helmet, the 27hope of salvation. 9For God has not destined us for 28wrath, but for 29obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 1030who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. 11Therefore, 31encourage one another and 32build one another up, just as you also are doing.

Christian Conduct

12But we ask you, brothers and sisters, to 33recognize those 34who diligently labor among you and 3536are in leadership over you in the Lord, and give you 37instruction, 13and that you regard them very highly in love because of their work. 38Live in peace with one another. 14We urge you, brothers and sisters, admonish 39the 40unruly, encourage 41the fainthearted, help 42the weak, be 43patient with everyone. 15See that 44no one repays another with evil for evil, but always 45seek what is good for one another and for all people. 1646Rejoice always, 1747pray without ceasing, 18in everything 48give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. 1949Do not quench the Spirit, 20do not utterly reject 5051prophecies, 21but 52examine everything; 53hold firmly to that which is good, 22abstain from every 54form of evil.

23Now 55may the God of peace 56Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your 57spirit and soul and body be kept complete, 58without blame at 59the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2460Faithful is He who 61calls you, and He also will do it.

25Brothers and sisters, 62pray for us63.

2664Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss. 27I put you under oath by the Lord to 65have this letter read to all the 66brothers and sisters.
