The Day of the Lord

1Now as to the 1times and the epochs, brethren, you 2have no need of anything to be written to you. 2For you yourselves know full well that 3the day of the Lord 4will come 5just like a thief in the night. 3While they are saying, “6Peace and safety!” then 78destruction 9will come upon them suddenly like 10labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape. 4But you, brethren, are not in 11darkness, that the day would overtake you 1213like a thief; 5for you are all 14sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of 15darkness; 6so then let us not 16sleep as 1718others do, but let us be alert and 1920sober. 7For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get 21drunk at night. 8But since 22we are of the day, let us 23be 24sober, having put on the 25breastplate of 26faith and love, and as a 27helmet, the 28hope of salvation. 9For God has not destined us for 29wrath, but for 30obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 1031who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. 11Therefore 32encourage one another and 33build up one another, just as you also are doing.

12But we request of you, brethren, that you 3435appreciate those 36who diligently labor among you, and 37have charge over you in the Lord and give you 38instruction, 13and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their work. 39Live in peace with one another. 14We urge you, brethren, admonish 40the 41unruly, encourage 42the fainthearted, help 43the weak, be 44patient with everyone. 15See that 45no one repays another with evil for evil, but always 46seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. 1647Rejoice always; 1748pray without ceasing; 18in everything 49give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1950Do not quench the Spirit; 20do not despise 51prophetic 52utterances. 21But 53examine everything carefully; 54hold fast to that which is good; 22abstain from every 55form of evil.

23Now 56may the God of peace 57Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your 58spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, 59without blame at 60the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2461Faithful is He who 62calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.

25Brethren, 63pray for us64.

2665Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss. 27I adjure you by the Lord to 66have this letter read to all the 67brethren.
