Context of 1 Samuel 15:2

1Then Samuel said to Saul, “The Lord sent me to anoint you as king over His people, over Israel; now therefore, listen to the words of the Lord. This is what the Lord of armies says: ‘I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, in that he obstructed him on the way while he was coming up from Egypt. 3Now go and strike Amalek and completely destroy everything that he has, and do not spare him; but put to death both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’” 4Then Saul summoned the people and counted them in Telaim: two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand men of Judah.

Commentaries on 1 Samuel 15:2

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2I remember that which Amalek did - The Amalekites were a people of Arabia Petraea, who had occupied a tract of country on the frontiers of Egypt and Palestine. They had acted with great cruelty towards the Israelites on their coming out of Egypt. (See Exodus 17:8; (note), and the notes there). They came upon them when they were faint and weary, and smote the hindermost of the people - those who were too weak to keep up with the rest. (See Deuteronomy…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2Compare the marginal references. It appears 1 Samuel 14:48 that this expedition against Amalek was not made without fresh provocation. Probably some incursion similar to that described in 1 Samuel 30 was made by them upon the south country at a time when they thought the Israelites were weakened by their contests with the Philistines.Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2LORD of Hosts: See study note on 1 Samuel 1:3. I witnessed: In the time of Moses, the nation of Amalek lived in southern Judah and the Negev area south of Judah. As Israel traveled to Canaan, the Amalekites attacked the sick, weak, and those at the back of the group. They were the first to attack Israel after the exodus from Egypt, for which God had promised to judge them (Exodus 17:8–16; Deuteronomy 25:17–19).Read the comment
