Context of Proverbs 13:11
9The light of the righteous rejoices, But the lamp of the wicked goes out. 10Through insolence comes nothing but strife, But wisdom is with those who receive counsel. Wealth obtained by fraud dwindles, But the one who gathers by labor increases it. 12Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But desire fulfilled is a tree of life. 13The one who despises the word will be in debt to it, But the one who fears the commandment will be rewarded.

Commentaries on Proverbs 13:11
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11Wealth gotten by vanity - Wealth that is not the result of honest industry and hard labor is seldom permanent. All fortunes acquired by speculation, lucky hits, and ministering to the pride or luxury of others, etc., soon become dissipated. They are not gotten in the way of Providence, and have not God's blessing, and therefore are not permanent.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11By vanity - literally, “by a breath,” i. e., by a windfall, or sudden stroke of fortune, not by honest labor. The general meaning seems to be that the mere possession of riches is as nothing; they come and go, but the power to gain by skill of hand (“labor”) is everything.Read the comment
