Context of Proverbs 13:11
9The light of the righteous rejoiceth; but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out. 10By pride there only cometh contention; but with the well-advised is wisdom. Wealth [gotten] by vanity diminisheth; but he that gathereth by manual-labour shall increase [it]. 12Hope deferred maketh the heart sick; but the desire [that] cometh to pass is a tree of life. 13Whoso despiseth the word shall be held by it; but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.

Commentaries on Proverbs 13:11
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11Wealth gotten by vanity - Wealth that is not the result of honest industry and hard labor is seldom permanent. All fortunes acquired by speculation, lucky hits, and ministering to the pride or luxury of others, etc., soon become dissipated. They are not gotten in the way of Providence, and have not God's blessing, and therefore are not permanent.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11By vanity - literally, “by a breath,” i. e., by a windfall, or sudden stroke of fortune, not by honest labor. The general meaning seems to be that the mere possession of riches is as nothing; they come and go, but the power to gain by skill of hand (“labor”) is everything.Read the comment
