Proverbs 4
A Father’s Instruction
1Hear, O sons, the 1instruction of a father, And 2give attention that you may 3gain understanding,2For I give you 4sound 5teaching; 6Do not abandon my 7instruction.3When I was a son to my father, 8Tender and 9the only son in the sight of my mother,4Then he 10taught me and said to me, “Let your heart 11hold fast my words; 12Keep my commandments and live;513Acquire wisdom! 14Acquire understanding! Do not forget nor turn away from the words of my mouth.6Do not forsake her, and she will guard you; 15Love her, and she will watch over you.716The 17beginning of wisdom is: 18Acquire wisdom; And with all your acquiring, get understanding.819Prize her, and she will exalt you; She will honor you if you embrace her.9She will place 20on your head a garland of grace; She will present you with a crown of beauty.”
10Hear, my son, and 21accept my sayings And the 22years of your life will be many.11I have 23directed you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in upright paths.12When you walk, your 24steps will not be impeded; And if you run, you 25will not stumble.1326Take hold of instruction; do not let go. Guard her, for she is your 27life.1428Do not enter the path of the wicked And do not proceed in the way of evil men.15Avoid it, do not pass by it; Turn away from it and pass on.16For they 29cannot sleep unless they do evil; And 30they are robbed of sleep unless they make someone stumble.17For they 31eat the bread of wickedness And drink the wine of violence.18But the 32path of the righteous is like the 33light of dawn, That 34shines brighter and brighter until the 35full day.19The 36way of the wicked is like darkness; They do not know over what they 3738stumble.
20My son, 39give attention to my words; 40Incline your ear to my sayings.2141Do not let them depart from your sight; 42Keep them in the midst of your heart.22For they are 43life to those who find them And 44health to all 45their body.23Watch over your heart with all diligence, For 46from it flow the springs of life.24Put away from you a 47deceitful mouth And 48put devious 49speech far from you.25Let your eyes look directly ahead And let your 50gaze be fixed straight in front of you.2651Watch the path of your feet And all your 52ways will be established.2753Do not turn to the right nor to the left; 54Turn your foot from evil.
