Context of Job 5:18
16So the helpless has hope, And unrighteousness must shut its mouth. 17“Behold, how happy is the man whom God reproves, So do not despise the discipline of the Almighty. For He inflicts pain, and gives relief; He wounds, and His hands also heal. 19From six troubles He will deliver you, Even in seven evil will not touch you. 20In famine He will redeem you from death, And in war from the power of the sword.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18For he maketh sore - That is, he afflicts. And bindeth up - He heals. This was a common mode of healing among the Hebrews; and the practice of medicine appears to have been confined much to external applications. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-27Verses 17-27 Eliphaz gives to Job a word of caution and exhortation: Despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty. A good man is happy though he be afflicted, for he has not lost his enjoyment of God, nor his title to heaven; nay, he is happy because he is afflicted…Read the comment
