Chapter 13—Should Christians Be Members of Secret Societies?

2SM 131.3

These societies offer some advantages which from a human point of view appear like great blessings, but not so when judged by the Lord’s measurement. Behind their apparent advantages are concealed satanic agencies. The larger the income drawn into the treasury, the more and deeper is the evil. The ungodly gain which has enriched these societies will, when traced out in all its bearings, be seen to be a curse. The words which Eliphaz spoke to Job are true in respect to these associations: “I saw him ‘taking root,’ but I ‘cursed his habitation’” (Job 5:3). They are Satan’s traps, his net to entangle souls.

Let every selfish desire to distinguish yourselves be set aside; take every suggestion from humanity to God, trusting in the guidance of the Holy Spirit; every unholy ambition should be blotted out, lest the Lord shall say, “I saw the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation.” [Job 5:3.] Every one should move so that he can say, “Thou, O Lord, knowest me: thou hast seen me, and tried mine heart toward thee.” [Jeremiah 12:3.] “Thou God seest me.” [Genesis 16:13.] The Lord weighs every motive. He is a discerner of the thoughts and intents and purposes of the heart. Without God we are without hope; therefore let us fix our faith upon Him. “Thou art my hope, O Lord God: thou art my trust from my youth.” [Psalm 71:5.]

The cries of starving humanity are coming up before God, while these men bow down to their senseless idols as verily as do the heathen to their gods of wood and stone. Though the whole world were in league to prove it otherwise, every dollar gained in this unholy traffic wraps a curse up with it. The larger the bank stock the more sure will be the judgment of God. Of these the words of Eliphaz will prove truth: “I saw him taking root, but I cursed his habitation.” [Job 5:3.] To them God will say as to the rich man: “Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall these things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” [Luke 12:20, 21.]

In the lessons that Christ gave to His disciples to be given to our world, the grand things of His spiritual kingdom are illustrated by the principles of His temporal kingdom. He hath established the world by His wisdom, and stretched out the heaven by His discretion. He is wonderful in counsel and excellent in working. “The foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” [1 Corinthians 1:25.] “He disappointeth the devices of the crafty so that they cannot perform their enterprise.” [Job 5:12.] His counsels stand forever, and the thoughts of His heart from generation to generation.

This was plainly revealed to me to show to the people. I have no words to speak to these men privately. My words must be given to the people as a whole. It is not to be left to some to repeat my words and transmit them to others. I wish to present the matter as God has presented it to me. How long shall blindness be upon the men who have had evidence piled upon evidence in regard to the testimony of God’s Spirit to His people? They do not discern where or how God is working. Eyes have they, but they see not; ears have they, but they hear not; understanding have they, but they understand not the things of God. “Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: for He maketh sore, and bindeth up: He woundeth, and His hands make whole” [Job 5:17, 18].

I have no words to speak individually to the men from whom this influence has come; my words must be spoken to them as a whole. It is not to be left to them to repeat my words to others, or to trample them under their feet and make of none effect the warning. I present the matter to them as God has presented it to me. How long will these men walk in darkness, when they have evidence piled on evidence that the testimonies given them are indicted by the Spirit of God to warn and to save His people? How long shall men in positions of trust fail to discern where and in what manner God is working? Eyes have they, but they see not. Ears have they, but they hear not. Understanding have they, but they understand not the things of God. Reproofs and warnings should not harden you, for “Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth, therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty; for he maketh sore, and he bindeth up; he woundeth, and his hands make whole.” [Job 5:17, 18.]
